NEWPORT BEACH CA - Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) announced today that they will include FS designation for 2004 nickels
"We have received numerous inquires from Jefferson nickels collectors who wanted to keep the FS designation for the entire series'' said David Hall, President of Collectors Universe, Inc., (Nasdaq: CLCT), parent company of PCGS (www.pcgs.com).
“FS of Full steps is a designation that PCGS uses to distinguish particularly sharply stuck nickels. Term applied to a Jefferson five-cent example when at least 5 steps of Monticello are present."
“Because the Monticello building has been removed to commemorate the Lewis and Clark expedition we obviously cannot use the full steps designation'' Hall pointed out.
“Since there are two nickel varieties of 2004 nickel” (the second version is due out in September) “we decided that FS will stand for Full Shake for the first nickel variety and the graders will look at the handshake that replaced the Monticello building. Nickels awarded with this new FS designation will have fully struck hand detail especially the fingernails. The second nickel variety will also have FS designation but in this case it will stand for Full Sail. Since the second variety is not yet available we cannot determine what will constitute this designation. We will inform the numismatic community about this designation requirement as soon as circulated examples become available.” Hall explained.
Beginning August 1st, the Full Shake (FS) designation will begin appearing on PCGS's population report and anyone registering a coin with the Full Bands designation in one of the nickel categories in the PCGS Set Registry(TM) will receive bonus points for that coin. According to B.J. Searls, PCGS Set Registry Director, "It will be the same bonus structure we use for Full Bell Line Franklin half-dollars and Full Band Mercury dimes."
For those having Peace Nickels already certified by PCGS that may qualify for the FS designation, these may be submitted for review of their status.

"Keep in mind that most of what passes as numismatic information is no more than tested opinion at best, and marketing blather at worst. However, I try to choose my words carefully, since I know that you guys are always watching." - Joe O'Connor
