seeking advice coin collection

Hey all,

My family recently inherited a coin collecion from my Uncle. 95% of the collection are U.S. coins. Most of the coins are post 1900, and they are all over the map, i.e. all denominations.. My question is, assuming we need to divide the collection, are there certain combinations of coins that should be kept together, either for value sake or simply the collectors view?

example, he happened to have bought a whole roll of each date in the 1950s , at least pennies, not sure about other denominations..
He seemed to have alot of half dollars and quarters. does it make sense to categorize a string of dates for one denomination, for example quarters, or divide by dates keeping all denominations of a particular date together.

thanks for your help in advance, Don

possible suggestion: add up the silver face value & divide equally as possible, do the same w/ nickel, & finally the same w/ copper coins.

In the case of the rolls, keep them intact rather than creating a "string" of dates for a denomination. There's an active and vibrant market for rolls.

Any proof or SMS sets in there from 1964 through 1970? image

    Don't clean anything
Don't divide proof or mint sets until you investigate.
    Keep all sets together

I'd recommend getting an idea of their value and use that as the basis for dividing them.
You migh take turns picking which specific items each wants.

  • You can get alot of useful advice here. If you make a list of the coins and post it the members will give you an idea of what you have. Dont clean, dont open rolls, handle carefully, and store in a dry place for now.

    Good luck,

  • For a small fee a local coin dealer should be able to give you an appraisal of your coins. This would let you divide things more evenly if there are coins/sets there that are more valuable than "junk" (common dates in cirulated grades) coins.
