Does anyone know anything about this transit token?

  • only thing I can tell you is that it is listed in Menzel as 10406.36. It is part of a long series (at least 46). I have one, but it is a different scene than yours (10406.32)

  • It's a tram token (strassenbahn : street train) for the city of Nürnberg. Nice design on the obverse which says "City savings bank" literally translated but Sparkasse is the name of a bank... the bank I use in fact. Sparkasse base their operations locally instead of nationally which is unusual but that means they don't have such a bureaucratic mess when applying to it which is a huge advantage.

As Kuhli said it is part of a series of 46 tokens that was issued during the 1917-22 period when a lot of municipalities, businesses and even private citizens were issuing notgeld tokens and notes. I just recently finished that set of street car tokens.

    Cool, thanks for the info!

How long did the set take to complete?

I just picked it up cheap at the Torex show in Toronto because of the German city view.

Probably about 5 years. On several occaisions during that period I was offered full sets for around $200 but I already had half the set put together so I passed. They aren't expnsive and I don't think any of them are rare. But as you get closer to completion any token that turns up has a greater and greater likelyhood of being one you already have.

Neato. I'd never seen those. Love the design on yours, and the octagonal shape.
