I'm not real great at morgans but I'll give this one a try.

    Morgan #1 F-12

    Morgan #2 VG-8

    Purple

Edit*** first eagle I Have seen with an outy LOL piece of lint or something on it.
  • Neither coin can be an F (due to wear on the cotton blossoms). Although I do admit the latter is slightly more worn than the former, I cannot grade either at a VG-08.

    VG10

    When in doubt, don't.

FN15 and FN12. Semi-key, original Morgans are cool.

Nice, a few rim taps, a scratch on the eagle...Over all even wear...

I would say, VG10 for the pair

    Just my untrained opinion.

They look nice to me though.

On the 1896 Reverse, the word "America" Behind the "C"...Is that another "A"?

Judging by the overall wear on these coins, I'd say they'd fit nicely into a PCGS VG-10. Very good images and super-nice original circulated semi-keys.

    VG-10 for both.
    Nice Morgans
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

Well, these aren't in slabs, I bought them raw. I think everyone agrees the 98-S is VG, and that is what I bought it as. The 96-S is a liner, and I think it can go either way. I'm not too concerned about whether it goes VG or F, the reason I bought these coins is that they are perfect examples of circulated Morgans that have managed to survive over 100 years without being molested.

By the way, thanks for all the compliments on the images. For circulated raw coins, my scanner does a good job.

Without the vertical lines inside the cotton bolls, neither would grade Fine at PCGS.
    When in doubt, don't.

We will find out. I'm sending these in along with some other stuff. I'm trying to get an example of each grade in a PCGS holder. I'll post these when I get the grades.

    Eric,

Who sold you those awesome coins?

That is a good thing to note. Circulated coins seem to be much more forgiving of the mode in which the picture is obtained. Also, your scanner seems to be a good one. Some scanners do not have the best optics to deal with coins, but do just fine for text.

Eric, I had guessed FN12/FN15. What's your best guess? (read: How far off did I overgrade these two?!) image

Pat, the 98-S is unquestionably a VG. As far as the 96-S, it's a real tough call. I bought it from John as a Fine, and I agree with his grade on it, but knowing PCGS, I wouldn't be surprised if it wound up in a VG10 holder.

Here's my only slabbed VG-8 for comparison purposes. I think yours are nicer.

    Bill:

    Tough variety you have there!

I suspect, however, it would grade only Good-6 at PCGS due to the incomplete denticle detail at 5 o'clock.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • DennisH,

I agree. I cracked it out for my album and now I'm seriously considering getting it re-slabbed, but I don't know whether to go with ANACS or PCGS (even with the likely downgrade).
