Spent an Ike Dollar today and..

anablepanablep Posts: 5,097 ✭✭✭✭✭
I went to the post office and purchased a book of stamps using currency and one Ike. The postal employee was soooo thrilled to see an Ike he set it aside and started showing the other employees what I just spent. I told him I was just trying to "get rid of it" and spend it and he said he had a few at home. i guess he's got one more tonight... I thought that was cool how he reacted. He couldn't believe how big the coin was and I just smiled...
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

  • It is a good thing that Congress knows best and forced the smaller dollar coin on us in the form of the SBA and the SAC.

The guy I dealt with at the PO was a little behind the curve. I spent a Kennedy and he asked if it was one of those new dollars. image
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
  • You should have said "yes". It is a good thing the US Mint doesn't put writing on our coins.

A little sad when you consider the PO is the largest distributor of the new dollars.
  • I still sometimes get people that think the SBA or SAC dollar is fake when I try to spend them.

Have you noticed that only the USPO stamp vending machines are the only things that accept them too?
I have still not found a soda or candy machine that will accept them.

I agree. Any vending machine owners on the forum? I would like to know why it has been over 2 decades since the SBA was introduced and they still are not accepted in vending machines.

All vending machines with newer coin accepters can accept the dollar coins, and give them back as change, if the owner wants to set the switch. I know as thats my business.

  • I know SBAs, Sacs and Ikes aren't extremely popular with experienced collectors but getting one of these in change may just be the thing that sparks an interest in coin collecting and the start of a wonderful new hobby for them. One of my first coins was a 78 Ike my Mom gave me.

As for the vending machines, we have a newspaper machine here in my town that accepts Sacs.

  • About 3 years ago I went out of my way to get several circulated Sacs and spent them at McDonald's. I just wanted to see the reaction I'd get. The girl at the counter had never seen them before and thought they were very pretty coins.

I spend Sac's and SBA's all the time. I usually get a double take but most tellers realize what they are fairly quickly. I have circulated Ike's I would spend put they are just too big for me to put very many in the ash tray of my car.

The new coke machines (We have tons of them here in N.W. IN and in Chicago) all take SACS (I am sure they take SBA's as well) I think in 2001 Coke introduced the machines and replaced most of the old standing models. Pepsi machines made in the last 18 months or so also have this same feature. They also have the capability of giving them out as change (which they would if you bought a 1 dollar pop with a 5 dollar bill). I know that I have used SACS just fine in these machines. It is rare that I see a pop machine that does not take SACS, even the local bowling ally switched (and they have had the same machines since the 60's).

The SACS will probab. eventually fail like the SBA's but the coin will always be remembered.... It is good to see that better efforts are being made by companies to use the dollar coins tho. Who know SAC here 2stay? I guess stranger things have happened.

Well thats my two flying eagles.

The vending machines in my area won't accept dollars. I still say the mint would do better to repopularize the half dollar.

I had some common date circ morgans that I'd randomly pick through and bring with me. As a joke I bought a coke at a local exxon station and put a morgan down on the counter to pay with and the attendant just looked at me like I was intelligently challenged. I explained what it was and ended up selling it to them for 5 bucks. I just know that made their month. image

I haven't had too many problems trying to spend a SAC and SBA. However, sometimes when I buy several rolls of half dollars at my local bank, they try and charge me $20 per roll instead of $10 per roll. Now, I would think that bank tellers would know how to count money. One teller 9 months ago still won't believe me, and had to get another teller to figure it out even after I told her several times. Too ironic!image
  • I'll leave silver dollars (Morgans, Peace & Ikes) as part of a tip at restaurants. The servers love them and you'll get as much fresh bread as you want.image
  • Halves are in the same boat as coin dollars.

Most of the ones out here in California seem to accept them. And even better -- the candy machine at my work accepts $2 bills!

For most vending machines made since 1979, there's a switch inside labeled "Dollar Coin Accept" -- usually all it takes is a twiddle, and it will start accepting dollar coins. You can hack it yourself, if you happen upon the machine while it's being loaded.

I used to spend them all the time when I was a kid. Damn, I feel old.

  • Well as far as I have found, the vending machines here in the Dallas Fort Worth area do not accept the dollar coins.
The newspaper machines around here also do not accept anything unless it is a quarter.
At work the coke machines accept dollar bills but the dollar coins won't even fit in the coin slots.
The candy machines also won't let them in either.

I never tried a 2 dollar bill though. My bank doesn't seem interested in distributing them anymore.

  • I carry an Ike dollar in my pocket (and have for over a year). When I bring out my pocket change, I am constantly asked to see it and a lot of times I am asked for it as they think it is cool.

    It is fun.

I used to carry 2 Anthony dollars too but when I found out I had only one I changed my mind.
