Free grading?

PCGS does a free grading deal once in a while for a specific type coin. Does anyone know what coins they are and where do you find out?
Thanks, John

You get one free grading per quarter if you are a gold or platinum member (you pay shipping). I believe this quarter the freebie is any coin that was made for 2 years... not positive, though...

That seems like an awfully narrow field.

Well Russ...you should know that you don't stay in business by giving away too much free stuffimage
  • Does that mean for only 2 years? I agree with Russ, that is a pretty narrow field.

  • I called PCGS and it is a 2 year coin... Some examples given were 1866-67 Sheild nickels, 1916-17 Standing liberty quarters, and flying eagle cents.
This quarter is from July to October 31st.
Wish I had sent in a coin for tha last freebie!

This quarter is from July to October 31st.

That would be a third. It actually goes from July 1 to Sept 30.

Okay, now I'm confused. All those had a run of more than two years. Is the freebie a "variety" that was a two year coin? Is it exactly two years, or two years or less?

Hey! 1913-1914 Buffalo Nickels were only made for 2 years. How about that?

  • Where is this information found?
  • I thought the 1916 Standing Quarter was a pattern? If they include that, why do they include the Flying Eagle Cent?

This quarter’s special is TWO YEAR TYPE COINS. These are U.S. coins that were made for only two years.

Examples would include the 1866-67 Shield Nickel (with rays), the Type I Standing Liberty Quarter (1916-17), No Stars Seated Dimes (1837-38), No Motto $10 Liberties (1907-08) and others. Even the Flying Eagle cent qualifies (1857-58) as the 1856’s were technically patterns. How many others can you find?

  • I had to call PCGS to get the word. And yes I was confused as well by some of the dates. But I think they consider the flying eagle 1856 a pattern, so the 1857-8 is the real date.

They told me the offer now is until Qctober 31st.

I did not have time to write down all of the coins they listed for me, so others are included. The first Buffalo nickes are most likely included. I asked if the info was online, but she said not at this time.
