Another grading service question!

Is one service better than the other for say, copper, and one for silver
or do they equally grade all coin types well?

  • Now here's one I can't answer. I use all three services and IMHO if you want a
greater value (at this time) go with PCGS. I use ANACS for my Morgan Dollars but
PCGS is on top right now,

If you have a specialty coin I would say that NGC or ANACS would be a better choice than PCGS. If you have a rare 6 step Jeff NGC IMO is a good place to go. If you have a Doubled die or OMM/RPM NGC or ANACS would probably be better as well. Run of the mill and HQ coins have better resale value in a PCGS holder but they grade a little tighter. An NGC MS67RD Lincoln will usually bring more than a PCGS 66RD so if your aim is to sell it may depend on the coin. Does this make sense?

You have to learn to grade and then make your own decisions regarding what you see in the holders of the various grading companies. In the end it is you who must decide if the coin merits the grade. Be very selective. Some people on this forum and in the marketplace put huge premiums on toning. I don't. Some, such as myself, will take strike over "flash" but, in general, the grading services reward "flash" more than strike.
    All glory is fleeting.

ANACS is very tight on copper. NGC & PCGS are about the same for silver. NGC being somewhat looser for the PLs & DMPLs (Morgan Dollars especially). I've never trusted ANACS with silver.image

they're all pretty loose across the board, imo.

Slabbing is useful for authentication and protection, and usually, a "ball park" grade. Bear in mind, the "names" and large submitters invariably get the benefit of the doubt. I've had coins body bagged that had less significant problems than those I've seen that were in slabs and owned by the aforementioned-and not on an infrequent basis. It's best to learn, within reason, how to grade and identify commonly encountered problems. ICG had the right philosophy-total anonymity-but they managed to shoot themselves in the foot (or was it in the head?) with their ridiculous MS/PR70 garbage.
