Gateway First Day Covers

Remember these? Before other companies (individuals) started producing, Gateway was it for FDCs. Anyone have any of the tougher issues from the '70s? I remember the 1979 AS Game Yaz was a difficult one to get. Does a priceguide exist? Does PSA grade?

Nice Yaz. I have a couple of Rose 3,000 hits covers. Not sure of the value of them though.

Now you're talking my languageimage I started collecting Gateways in 1979 and am still doing so. Along the way, I've managed to maintain a complete collection, except for a couple of the variations such as the Nolan Ryan 3,000th K and Lou Brock Career Stolen Base Record. The only price guide I know of is the Krause SCD Guide to Sports Memorabilia. It has a section listing prices for all the Gateways. The problem with it is that the prices have no basis in reality. If I remember correctly, it lists the 1978 Bob Forsch 1st no-hitter envelope (which Gateway issued only 105 of) at something like $15.00. They went in the auction for just over $100 each and I think the last Gateway catalog price is over $1,500. I know one was sold on ebay within the past year for around $500 or so.

A good place to go if you're interested in the Gateways is their website, www.gatewaystamp.com. Tom and Rose Wiley are great and very friendly, and really seem to go out of their way to make sure their customers get what they pay for.

  • I knew I'd find an expert, very impressive collection that you have. I do remember the Forsch being the Holy Grail cover. I thought the covers were so beautiful, but became turned off when others started producing in hoards.

Any idea what that 1979 AS Game in Seattle (Yaz) is worth?

    What an awesome site!

  • Very impressive. As a former player collector I can sure appreciate your array of covers. Which one is the hardest to come by?

The Wild Horse is tough because it is hand painted and #/76 or so.

I have only seen one other FIELDS. The Gateway 3000th hit can be tough to find as a clean set of 2, but they are out there.
