Help grade this 61-P Franklin if you will.

I'm not a Franklin guy, but this is a decent coin. Lots of die polish, but minimal marks. The coin has great luster in hand. These pics were pretty hasty under a regular incandescent lamp.

I agree with Russ. The Die Polish won't affect the grade as it was mint made.

MS-65FBL (one or two too many marks for 66)

I agree with the MS65FBL grade, though I would say it might sadly even come in MS64FBL because of the marks on the bell - hopefully they're being magnified by the picture. Either way you made out like a bandit ya bum! image

    MS64FBL - $100
    MS65FBL - $1000-1200
    MS66FBL - Celestial body money

  • 64fbl or 65fbl. I recently sent one like that ...felt sure it was a 64fbl...but its now pcgs 65fbl...so keep yer fingers crossed!

Is that a minor lamination thru the L in Liberty?

Edit to add: That strike is really , really huge! Three wisps in the sideburns, full hair detail, squared off lettering, and FBL! that is an unusual 61!

Hey - that is pretty cool - I hadn't noticed - Don - can you take a close up of that doubling? Is it machine doubling or smoething else?

Machine doubling. You can tell with the doubling around the whole design.

Nice coin. Great strike for a 61-P. 65FBL, also looks like a scratch in right obverse that would also help keep it out of 66 consideration. I have an ANACS slabbed 61-P with double die on the holder.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

Beautiful coin. Is that lint on the left middle of the bell? If so and there's no
die problem on the "L" then I believe it will be bumped to MS-65 FBL for the
    strike.

Thanks all. The mark by the L on the obverse is a toning streak. Ron noticed the scratch in the right obverse that is tiny but catches the light when rotated, and there is a small hit on the bell, along with some minor chatter. The doubling is MDD. I'll submit this one. My initial take on the coin was 64.9, which is pretty close to the consensus. It's well struck, and 65 would be credible. I'll post when it grades.

dunno about the bell lines, but i would of guessed ms-63.

    K S
  • I'm with Karl. MS-63 but may slide to a 64 the way companys grade these days. The bell lines are not complete on the upper set, so no FBL. Still a nice half for the year and mint.

MS64FBL may even make a 65FBL holder image I however have concerns over the amount of marks on the bell and what looks like a marks or something cutting across the '"L" in Liberty. But I think it's an awesome Frankie...but of course 1961 holds a place in me heartimage

    You rock DHeath!

Edited: I guess I should have read more of the thread. So the mark across the L was a toning strip...cool!
