Got my new JRJ and GJ issues today

In the JRJ, I immediately went to the article by one of our very own re Baley's O.115. No articles about ED's though.

In the GJ, I also went to an article by one of our own -- the one re Trade Dollars. I'm also eager to read the articles about the 1851-O and J-60 dollars.

Yup, interesting stuff about the SD overstrikes - in short, anyone out there who owns an 1851 or 1852 should have a close look at it to see if it was struck over anything else.

Doh. Forgot that the restrikes are proof only. Although, haven't there been rumours from time to time about someone finding an Unc restrike?

Never heard of an UNC restrike from that period. Wouldn't make any sense to me. The restrikes were meant to be "special" enough to be considered a numismatic valuable. At that time, that meant PF.

Has anyone read the article offering a new (and as far as I'm concerned cogent) hypothesis for why "E" and "L" are counterstamped on some high-grade 1815 and 1825 quarters? I was riveted.

I just examined an 1851 Restrike in 63DC. It is relatively untoned, and I used a 5x and a 16x loupe. Neither generated any real evidence of an undertype.

Varlis, I have not yet received my JRJ. What's the new theory regarding the "L" and "E" Counterstamps? I just bought an 1825 Quarter in AU that has the "L" counterstamp. It is my understanding that the quarters were given to school children who earned good grades in English and Latin. Has that theory changed?

The Latin/English theory has no strong basis. The current JRJ article's theory makes for very interesting reading, and is based on the Harmony Society. E for Economite, L for Leonite. Who remembers their early 19th Cent US history?
