Brien Taylor, Ryan Anderson, and Rick Ankiel

I was wondering if anyone knew what was going on with these guys.

Rick Ankiel was pitching for the Tennessee Smokies (AA I think) last year, going 2-6, 6.29 ERA with 38 walks in 54 innings through 7/2/03 and then elbow surgery.

Brien Taylor pitched in 5 games in 2000 in the Cleveland chain, but he did poorly so I guess hung them up there.

Ryan Anderson missed 2001-2003 with injuries, and maybe he just never came all the way back to actually pitch, though I found a notice from 1/13/04 saying the M's optioned him to Tacoma.

I feel badly for the guys who suffer injuries doing what they are trained to do. Ankiel, who had such a weird and uncorrectable problem, seems even sadder. Ryan Anderson was such an interesting prospect, and a nice guy I've heard. Taylor, too, I suppose, never having gotten there at all. A lot of people were still paying good money for Ankiel cards in 2003, hoping. Sometimes I think I'd like to put together a collection myself (I dumped mine when he peaked). I've been looking for a 1993 Stadium Club 1st Day Edition and a 1992 Topps autograph Taylor for a while, and when they come up they go for more than I want to spend ($10+).
WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

I can't speak about the status of Ankiel or Ryan Anderson, but there was a small piece about Brien Taylor in the July 12-19th edition of Sports Illustrated ("Where Are they Now" type piece). Taylor (now 32) is out of baseball after pitching in the Indians system in '00 (never reaching the "Show").

  • I might be wrong but i think Ankiel is recovering from Tommy John surgery.
I heard a year or so ago he was playing in the outfield and hitting homeruns

  • It would be nice to see Ankiel come back. He's a real good hitter,so maybe he has that to fall back on.
