IMPORTANT FULL STEP JEFFERSON AUCTION!

I want to let everyone know that my Jefferson Nickel registry set (which is ranked #4 all-time) will be auctioned by Bowers and Merena on Saturday, August 14th in Pittsburgh, a few days before the ANA show. I guarantee that there are several once-in-a-lifetime coins available here! The monsters include the UNIQUE 1960-D in FS and the finest known 1961-D (PCGS 65FS). The 60-D is the only one I have ever seen that has no weakness under the 3rd pillar and the 61-D is just flat-out awesome. This coin caused me to pay several times more than any Jefferson nickel set had ever sold for when I bought the personal collection of Jefferson Nickel Analyst author Bernard Nagengast many years ago. The 1963-D is 65 FS and a pop 2. The 1953-P (65 FS) is easily the finest known with nice toning and sharp steps. I could mention others, but you get the point!
The majority of coins in this set came from the original Nagengast collection. Back in the 1970's when original rolls were more available, he searched about 300,000 uncirculated coins to build his collection! Since that time, I have upgraded through my own decades long search at coin shows and auctions. I strongly encourage you to check out this auction as most of these coins are rarely available. I understand there will be internet bidding to go along with the live auction. Check out the bowersandmerena.com website for more details. Incidentally, the 38-P 67FS, 38-S 65FS, and 55-D 65FS are not available and will be replaced with other coins. However, I am adding a beautiful high-end 1943/2 PCGS 66FS (5 3/4 sharp steps) to compliment the rest of the collection! I hope you find something special to enhance your collection. Good Luck!

    Steve:

Best of luck with the auction. If there was ever a Jefferson set that would make enough of a splash to get the attention of the coin collecting world, yours is certainly one of them!
    When in doubt, don't.

    hello Steve and welcome!!!

there was speculation on another thread as to the identity of the "Nevadaman" so it's nice to have the mystery cleared up. i'd be curious as to where the auction will be held. is it right at the show sight of the P.A.N. Show pre-ANA or will it be held at the DL Center where the ANA will be held??

also, how did you come to be in contact with the "Analyst" to even have a chance to peruse his collection, let alone be considered as a buyer?? it must have been breathtaking to see the-best-of-the-best that was assembled prior to writing the book, the research material so to speak. are still in contact on any basis with BN??

    Nevadaman,

Cool icon coin. Is it slabbed?

  • Thanks for the good words guys. Keets...I don't know the exact answer to your question, but the bowersandmerena.com website should have the specifics. I think the actual live auction is held at a hotel near the ANA somewhere. I haven't looked into that since I can't attend in person. I live in Las Vegas as you may have guessed from my handle! As for how I came to have the opportunity to buy Bernard's coins... it was very simple. He was selling a lot of duplicates and I was a strong buyer of them. I made sure I paid immediately and was good to deal with. In time, he thought of me first when he was ready to sell! I think there's a good lesson here for everybody. Don't be a pain in the ass buyer, or you'll be off the "A" list of clients! Primo material is hard to come by and you want to be on the top of everybody's list if possible. I haven't spoken with Bernard recently, but I know he is still the owner of the ET Kointainer company. Russ, unfortunately, I don't own that icon coin, it was just one of the choices available to pick when I signed up! I had to scroll through tons of crap to find it though! image

Steve, I'm sure the reason for the sale is something you feel you must do, and that you've thought it through as the best way to go. I know it wasn't an easy decision for you and am positive were there any other way, you'd keep it.

The fact that they were BNs personal collection should warrant a pedigree on the labels in honor of the man most responsible for the foundation of todays FS standards.

I truly wish I could afford to buy the entire collection to keep it intact, but short of winning a lottery, it won't happen. I feel that the peacemeal breakup of the collection from both BN and your efforts to have the best is a loss to all us true FS Jeff collectors. image

    Best of luck.

    David

PS I too live in Vegas (SW Rhodes Ranch area) and collect nothing but FS Jeffs---preferably raw.
