Grades Back (Ouch Again)

1 21629914 1854 $3 USA Not Genuine
2 21629915 1910-S $20 USA MS62
3 21629916 1911 $20 USA Cleaning
4 21629917 1896 S$1 USA MS64

Gee, now I've got both the 1854 and 1855 Fake $3 gold. I wonder if I can collect the whole series.

They must have incredible experience and eyesight, because those double eagles looked really similar to me.

Sometimes minor hairlines are very, very difficult to see... it only takes a few to get the bag.

Where did you get the $3 from?
  • They were both given to me by my dad, who picked them up years ago, he worked in the jewelry trade.

$3 gold is one of the most commonly faked gold coins. They have relatively little metal in them (compared to a $10 or $20) and they are worth a lot, even in circ. condition The counterfeiter therefore makes a huge profit. Another common fake is $2.50 Liberty quarter eagles in mint condition. Same idea- little bit of gold, lots of money. I've been told that most of the counterfeits originate in Eastern Europe. You should look and see if your $3 gold fakes have a "B" mintmark for "Bulgaria"! (kidding). Perhpas your dad knew they weren't real, bought them for bullion value, and put them aside as keepsakes?

Buying raw gold is a big risk. There is usually a reason why it is not slabbed. Where did you buy the fake $3's?
    All glory is fleeting.

fake $3 gold DOES have some value, if it's made of real gold.
