What's a Reggie Jackson Topps rookie card worth? It grades around a 6/7.

Is it worth slabbing?

SMR lists 1969T Reggie at $135 for 6 EX-MT and $235 for 7 NR-MT. I'd sure get it graded, especially if you ever want to sell it. Even if not. It's a pretty valuable and popular card.

Centering is the big thing with Jackson rookies, they are notorious for being signficantly off the mark and the narrow borders leave no margin (ha ha) for error. If you have a 7 and the centering doesn't meet PSA's guidelines for that grade, you're looking at 7oc, which takes a big hit in the marketplace. You can ask for no qualifier, but that would drop the grade to anything from 4 to 6, depending how badly off-center. Assuming it really is a 7 in other respects.

    Good luck.
  • If you are correct in your assessment of the condition then it is worth it to slab it.

ZodiacMindwarp-Thanks for posting those numbers. I am always looking to buy a Reggie in PSA 7. The prices have really fluctuated. Now, looks like a decent time to buy.
  • I have a 9oc Reggie Jackson on Ebay right now. Had I asked no qualifiers it likely would have been a 7. Centering is weird for that set. Its off center on the front of the card and perfectly centered on the back. Strange stuff.

  • kehfee,

Sales of PSA 9oc have been:

    $150.00 3/15 oc
    $82.00 3/16 oc
    $134.50 3/23 oc
    $100.00 4/5 oc
    $76.00 5/17 oc
    $306.50 5/25 oc
    $106.50 6/3 oc
    $107.50 6/4 oc

I'm not sure what happened on May 25th but I don't think that's likely to occur again any time soon.
  • Thanks for the info. That's certainly interesting. I set a reserve on it so it likely won't sell. (According to your historical trends) but its certainly something I'll look at resubmitting for a straight grade.

I sold a 7OC two years ago for $75. It was a pretty bad OC, too--probably 5-ish without the qualifier. The sad part is that I bought the dang thing back in 1985 for $100 from a friend. It was during my "Clueless Newbie Phase", or CNP for short. My CNP was mostly filled with me overpaying for lackluster star cards, although I did manage to somehow finagle an eventual PSA 7 '65 Clemente for $8.

Anyway, I think I got a good price for my Reggie--at the time I sold it and even if I were to get that for it today. I'd recognize it immediately if I saw it, too. I doubt there are any 7OC's out there worsely centered than mine was.

Mike , Do you just plug that pricing info into a spreadsheet as you go? You've been very helpful with it. I was thinking of doing that but have lost several months worth of pricing by not starting when I started my graded set.

  • Dave,

About twice a week I go through all of the closed sales and record the information on a spreadsheet. It's not fancy but it gives me a good idea what I should be bidding on any card in the 1969 set. I started January 1 and I've got somewhere between 4,000 and 5,000 entries. It's very time consuming and it gets frustrating but I force myself to keep up with it.

I know that Virtualizard does the same thing for his 1960 set and I am curious who else does this or what steps people take to to keep themselves within a budget. Maybe it's a topic for another thread?
