Is the date on the rim or something?

KM746.1 (1851-1863) and KM746.4 (1877-1887) didn't have them, but KM746.3 (1863-1867) and KM746.2 (1868-1878) did, according to Krause. (Maybe that same expert can explain what Krause is talking about.)

<< <i>Looks more like mdcccliii (1853) to me, but we need an expert to tell us if there is a "die number" on the coin.

Not an expert, by any means, but do have a few answers here. Yes, there is a die number on this coin. Look carefully below the bust of Vicky, and you will see a very small "38" between the truncation and the rim. The dies were numbered as part of a tracking system to determine die life. Apparently some dies were used at different pressures on the press, to help find the best combination of quality and quantity. At least that is what I have been told.
I'm afraid to be alive without being aware of it
