While I think this is a service to most buyers, as these are pretty much the only ones I generally trust as well where authentication is concerned...isn't this continuing to take eBay farther and farther away to merely being a "venue"? Seems to me the other services could take action on them, as they are now offering opinions as to which should be services should be considered as "authenticated," thus perhaps damaging their claims to be only a venue.
They've used the "we're just a venue" claim again and again, successfully, in legal challenges. One has to wonder how many times they can do stuff like this and still win those suits.
I would suspect they chose those particular TPG's from a 'most common searched for' list.

You may well be right, but it still seems to me that this sort of thing could be seen in the courts as a de facto endorsement of certain types of slabs as "certified." And you come dangerously close to losing status as a "venue" as far as I'm concerned when you do that.
Good point Ziggy. I bet as soon as somebody tries to cross an ICG MS70 to PCGS, they could challange eBay's recommendation.
This is a new feature as part of eBay's and the ANA's new friendship. When you browse in the coin category there is a box up top that says
Autenticated Coins

Where does it say anything about eBay 'recommending' anything? It's not like the big black link at the top of this page where they specifically recommend a certain company.
I see it as a simple search link that has a few random TPG name criteria. Probably resulting from a 'popular' or 'most common search' result.
I think you're reading way more into it than anyone at eBay probably intended.

Oh, I agree with you -- I don't think they *intended* for this to be any specific endorsement of certain grading services.
But I'm not sure other slabbers -- or their lawyers -- would agree, and I'm not 100% convinced that they wouldn't have a case against the "just a venue" excuse.
