1973 baseball set

Just looking for your opinions on this set.
I see that some PSA 9's just ended on ebay with some pretty decent action.

This is my favorite set from the 70's, although it's been said that the design
is very bland. It could probably win the "ugliest set" of the 70's award.
I prefer to collect the opc version instead of the topps.

How does this set compare to the 1972 set as far as how many people are going after it ?

Using 20% or more completion as a fair judgement of those active with the sets......

73 has 15 sets in progress, while the year before and the year after have 22 and 21 sets respectively. So it seems the 73s are not quite as popular as sets near it in age.

It is the end of an era, 1973 was the final set issued in multiple series, contains the last regular issue cards of Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente. It features many action shots on the front, and while not rare, may have been the last older set to use so many. The beauty of this set, or any, is truly a matter of taste, some love the black bordersof 71, some enjoy purple and green and yellow, etc. of 75, some like traditional white borders and "live" in action photos.

I like the 73 set. Right now, the prices on PSA8s and 9s are downright cheap. I really like the action shots. To me, they seem to really capture the era. Some sets, you don't really know what time period you're looking at. But with 73 Topps, the photography and images are definitely representative of the early 70s.

So full of action, my name should be a verb.
  • I've got one of the top yet incomplete sets, and although I have a sentimental attachment to the set, I remain ambivalent. No, it's not the ugliest set produced but in my book it beats hands down anything produced after 1975 (I mean, why bother with anything after 1975 - really??), yet I acknowledge it lacks the pizazz of the 1972 and 1975 sets.

The 1973 set boasts only one great rookie - Schmidt - and also has the ugliest Reggie Jackson card ever done! The action shots are good but yet have a high error rate (#45 Ellie Rodriguez, are you reading?). It also has the least favorite - by the players because they have told me so - cards of Rose and Bench, both of which feature their butts quite prominently.

I also like it because of the last regular issue Mays and Clemente cards -although Clemente has been dead four months by the beginning of the 1973 season.

All in all not a very strong set, not to mention the crappy paper stock and the nasty reverse centering.

  • There has been a significant pick up in action on the 9's lately. I like the 73 set, mainly because it has fewer head shots than most sets around it. When you look at the 69 set and the 73 set, it's hard to believe only 4 years seperate the photography. The 9's though have been going for $50-100 recently, so I haven't been picking many up. The 72's seem to be a little cheaper right now.
