Finally, somebody let me win an auction...

It seems like all the coins I have interest in go way beyond what I want to spend on them, but I finally won something I wanted!
I just liked the strike on this piece, it was described as golden-gray in color and these are the seller's pics

You can play guess the grade if you want.

That is a rather crisp looking strike.

    AU55.

That's a rather nice strike. I'd say AU-55, but with the scratches I see on the reverse, mostly below the eagle, I'd net it down to AU-50.

BB harsh cleaning. The color looks way to silver for a coin of that age.

Well, its obviously not in a body bag. I'd guesstimate an AU55.

Edited; Oh yeah, that IS a nice strike, would be interesting to see where it ended if not for the obverse and reverse scratches. I have a 1905-S $5.00 Gold with that type of marks on the obverse that went AU58.

no insult, I said 'play guess the grade if you want' because it is an obvious 55.

Oops, I forgot the wink. image

I'll go out on a limb here and guess low end mint state 60 or 61. The rims look damage free and the high spots don't appear to have rub.

There were over a hundred obverse and reverse dies used for that issue. Lots of rust problems and heavy polishing to keep up with the demands of production. I think 55 is right on the money for that coin.

OK, one other image I left out, the coin has somewhat prooflike surfaces... I'll know more when I have the coin in hand.

    Nice find.
