Nice coin, other than the variety, tell us about it. What's the grade?

I'm sure mrearlygold will be able to help....

That just it Seth I dont know the variety. The coin is in an ANACS VF holder net graded VF "scratched". I really dont know what they are talking about here though. I would think any 207 year old gold coin would have circulation scratches and abrasions. Sometimes I think they are too quick to Net grade. My opinion is VF-30.

My guess on the variety is Taraszka-12, due to the "cross" star alignment in the reverse, but really I have no idea.

I'll take a stab at it:

1797 ... 16 obverse stars, normal date. Unique?
    Breen 12X = Hilt 13M

I have no idea what that means, well, I do know now a little. Looking at Breens Encyclopedia ...

to quote Breen, "the var. Ill. (2-C) is much rarer, expecially with the [die] break between ER to leaf."

I think I see the die break!

Yes Baley, there is a die crack between the E & R to the leaf. There is also a die crack thru the C. On the obverse there is a crack thru the 7.
