Then and Now: Part One

I was looking through an old box in my closet and came across a Beckett from October 1989 with the Texas Express (Nolan Ryan for the uninitiated)and Rapid Robert (Bob Feller) on the cover. I decided to take a gander and see what some of the values were back then. Here is a sample (some of which may surprise):

  • My, what a difference 5 years can make. They really blew up between '84 and '89. image They've mostly leveled out since then with only Mantle having any huge gains (no surprise there). image

Those were wild years - that's when the suits and speculators started coming in the doors, plopping down huge sums of money, throwing around terms like portfolio and investment quality and, basically, turning our little hobby into a little Wall Street. It hasn't been the same since. image

Now if you really want to cry, compare prices to the first issue of the Beckett annual BB guide from 1979. I don't have it handy, but if I remember right, the Pete Rose RC for instance, listed for $5.00, the 1953 Topps BB set listed at $75.00, and T206 Ty Cobbs in Ex-Mt condition were at $20.00 eachimage

    or maybe not

No matter what they go up to, I sure won't, but that's only because I don't have $100k.

I know this may sound nuts, but I think the Wagners will be a million each in 20 years - maybe 10. There will be too many filthy rich older Americans and not enough of them to go around. Of course I also thought Ruben Sierra was going to be the next Mickey Mantle and I have hundreds of his cards in my closet.
  • i have a box of old becketts that i go through time to time. just to look at older prices, and sometimes even read the articles. how bout these do-zies from may 94.

    83 topps sandberg $45
    83 topps boggs $30
    84 donruss joe carter $60
    85 donruss puckett $45
    85 topps mcgwire $15
    86 donruss mcgriff $32/canseco $25/fielder $25
    89 ud griffey $55
    90 leaf sammy sosa $5
    92 topps traded garciaparra .50
    93 sp jeter $2.50

what i would do to be Dr. Emmitt L. Brown for a day. "while certainly i'll let all my mint joe carter rookies go for 50% of book in trade for all your leaf sosa's and jeter sp's. i've got these cecil fielder rookies also if interested at 25% of book if you have any big macs or gold garciaparra's."
  • UNISHIP-should've got rid of em in 94. $6.50 a pop for 87 fleer, 3 for the donruss, and $4.50 each for both 86's. who would've thought?

and who in the h@ll was paying $225 for 75 topps brett rookies?? and back in those days, they weren't even graded!!

    << <i>1968 Topps #177 Ryan/Koosman (T)$400.00 (N)$500.00 - $33.00 >>

I bought a 68 Ryan in late '83 for $25. Now resides in a PSA 7 holder. At that show I also bought 10 82T Ripkens for $3.75 ea.

My first price guide (and I still have it) was the old flimsy papered CPU guide from May 1983. Having about 350 67T high numbers (3 seavers, 2 carews, etc) I thought I was a rich man. In today's terms, these 1967 cards would have graded anywhere from psa 4 to psa 7 (at least a few). Sadly they are all gone now, with the exception of a few commons.

I'll have to dig it out sometime and do a then and now.

Anyone want to make an offer on about 300 Mint '86D Rookies and about 70 1987F Bobby Bonilla ?????

Surely there's a neighbor or family member of Bobbys' that you know............ image

  • I know a lot of collectors that stocked up on Strawberry ('83 Traded), Jose Canseco and Bo Jackson Rookies too. Very painful (especially the Strawberry rookies that were at $75.00 ea. back then)! image
