There has been a fair amount of chatter regarding the 1792 Half--Disme (how do you pronounce "disme", anyway?).
In his November 1939 sale of the William B Hale Collection, B. Max Mehl, best known as Mark Feld's great-uncle, offered the following:
"lot 352- 1792 Martha Washington Half Disme. The first coin struck at the United States Mint from silver plate furnished by George Washington. Head of Liberty, supposed to be that of Martha Washington, rev., small flying eagle. Extremely fine with mint luster; only faintist hair lines marks on obverse., hardly noticeable."
Guess the price that it sold for AND whether this price was higher or lower than lot 855 (1856-D quarter eagle in extremely fine condition). So the entry will read, "$xxxxxxxxx and "higher" or "lower".
The closest entry (with preference given to YNs) will be awarded the Norweb I auction catalog (Bowers and Merena, October, 1987), including the half cents, half dimes, dimes, twenty cent pieces, $3's, half eagles, CalGold, and Colonials from the Norweb collection. It is a treat to browse.
Mgoodm3 and others, one entry, no edits, usual rules, contest ends Sunday 9 PM Central time. Have fun and good luck!

Let's say $23, lower
Toned Coins for sale @ tonedcointrader.com
I think "disme" is pronouced the same as "dime". The "s" is silent & doesn't affect the pronuciation.
At least this is what I've heard.............
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

The correct answer is $63 and lower. The 1856 quarter eagle sold for a whopping $210. It appears that there were plenty of branch mint gold enthusiasts 65 years ago! Thanks for playing.
