Canadian Cents

I am almost done with my Small Canadian Cent set from 1920-Date, I just have about ten to fifteen missing. I just have a couple questions. Are there any varieties to look for?Which years were also minted at Winnipeg and carry the mintmark "W"? And lastly, are there any coin albums that have space for proofs and circulation quality Canadian Cents?

  • I don't believe so wrt to mint marks, there are some 1948 varieties which describe the placement of the 'A' wrt to the denticles on the obverse.

  • I guess you could consider the 1947 ML (maple leaf) a variety....it was actually minted in 1948, but new dies weren't ready, so they added a tiny maple beside the date, to denote the difference from the regular 1947 & 1948 issues. Any coin book should list them, as well as the PCGS set registry

  • I'll keep an eye out for those two, does anyone have a close-up picture of the 1965 and 1985 blunt and pointed 5 varieties?
  • your best bet would be to do a search at the CCRS CCRS
  • Several varieties of 1965.

The "P" is not a mintmark, but used to distinguish whether or not the coin is plated steel or not.
These are minted in Ottawa, along with the normal issues.
Winnipeg issues carry the "W" mintmark, and are found only in sets, none issued for circulation.
