question about grading cards with autographs straight from the pack

I was curious, I was thinking about taking on a set of autographs like the 1992 proline portraits autograph set. My question is do I have to have PSA/DNA certify it authentic before PSA will grade or is it being part of the set from the manufacturer good enough? Any help would be apreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

  • Only manufacturer's issues from 1998 on can go straight to PSA. Anything earlier has to go via PSA/DNA.
    Hope that helps.

hmmm I wonder why? Doesnt the Proline have a "COA" on the back of the card?

I never understood that either. I mean, by 1998 we had already seen autos in packs for 8 years, including Donruss's two 1-per-pack Signature sets. They need to be DNA'd? There were a couple cards that didn't have COA's on them or any other distinguishing features, like Fleer's mid-90s Roger Clemens set of autos where they were basically regular signed cards, so it would be tough to say they weren't just signed at the ballpark. But most were different in some way. Even the 1990 Reggie Jackson Heroes cards had a hologram on them shaped differently from the plain ones, IIRC.

Also, the 1990 Score Mantle autographed cards not only had Mickey's signature, they had "No. 1055 of 2,500 Personally Autographed Cards" printed on the reverse. This seems pretty convincing evidence of authenticity. Is this just a money grabbing scheme to get more business for PSA/DNA?

I found this policy to be stupid also. It explains the lack of submissions to PSA/DNA for pre 1998 certified cards. I have the entire 1995 Proline auto set, most of the 1997 UD Legends set plus many singles from all the other proline auto sets and even signature rookies, and I wouldn NEVER pay $20 a card to have them authenticated when the cards already have a COA from their respective companies. It would make more sense to allow collectors to submit cards w/ a COA to PSA and cards w/ no COA to PSA/DNA. Just my opinion.

gregm - but do you have the UD Legends Donnie Shell card signed by Donnie or the one signed by Mrs. Shell? This is not a joke. She signed a large percentage of his cards (and her D's are rounded, while his are angular). Signature Rookies had several instances where someone other than the player signed his cards - Isaiah
Rider, Errict Rhett, and Roy Rogers (whose cards were signed Roy Rodgers) come to mind, and there are persistent rumors about others.

Personally, I think PSA should allow submissions of manufacturer-certified autographed cards pre-1998 where they do not certify the autograph at all, but simply state that the manufacturer has certified it, and grade the card. Such a card, however, would have a special type of certification and authentication.

Whether it goes to PSA/DNA or not, they still charge $20 a pop ... enough to get me to abandon a PSA-graded HOF football collection.

    probably.

    Nick,

I agree - grade the cards with a disclaimer that the authentication is the SOLE responsibility of the card company that manufactured the cards. Another issue is when players autopenned their cards - such as the 1991 Proline Jim Kelly? There are other instances but this is one of the best known examples.

  • I've seen some of the 97 Legends in SGC holders. Does anyone know if they just grade them or is there a separate fee/company like PSA/DNA that grades them for SGC?

97 Legends look great in SGC holders. Regular grading fees apply.

I am patiently waiting for GAI to get their act and registry together. I'll have PSA/DNA slab my vintage autos and GAI will get all my modern certified stuff.
