New member trying to rip us off! Do NOT buy from "dav"!!!!!

Hello all,

Just a warning to all who may be considering a transaction with "dav"!

He tells you he has nice, high quality coins, even posts pics........then tells you to send a MO, with the memo space blank, to a money exchange business, that also sells bullion coins. He places an order for bullion coins and tells the guy a MO will be mailed from your address, and requests that the bullion be sent to his address.

Lucky for us, the owner of the business is honest, and smelled something fishy! He called to verify the transaction and agreed to return the MO.

I am NOT the only member to have this happen. I know of at least one other member who was taken advantage of in this manner with this guy!

Another member I PM'd with was smart enough to request references, and declined to continue the transaction when "dav" couldn't'wouldn't provide any.

This is the first time I've run across this type of dishonesty here on the boards and I felt a VERY strong obligation to make the rest of you aware of this situation, so as to prevent any further problems from arrising!

I have always felt fairly safe in dealing with board members in the past. Many of you can attest that I've sent coins out, just on the promise to pay from board members. This whole experience has been a bit disconcerting, and an eye-opener, to say the least.

    Ron,

Thanks for the heads up. I wonder if the moderators could do something to end his rampage on the boards.....

    David
  • I would also like to thank you for the heads up. The fortunate thing with getting rid of them, they just change there names and come back as someone else. They usually have a new scam to go along with the new name. But Ron saved somebody some heart ache by exposing this person.

    Thanks

I had the same thing happen. Just in case he comes back under another name here is the info on where he said to send the money.

    Name AFS INC.
    Address 144-31 41 AVE # 5L
    City/State/Zip Code FLUSHING, NY 11355 - 1456

Please make money order payable to:
    MICHAEL KRASIL

We were very lucky the owner was conscientous. He even had to look up my phone number to call me. Most people would have let the trasaction go through.
  • Ron,

    Many thanks for the warning.

    THIS S*CKS.

I recently had a dealing with a new member where some Kennedy's were described as being MS64-64, & when I received them they were nowhere close. My PM's were never returned....
Another new member PM'ed me saying he bought a Morgan that was described as a gem was not. The thread for the Morgan stated a 5 day (I believe) return policy & he sent the Morgan back right away. His e-mails to this member are being returned! This 'guy' that we sent money to is no longer a paypal member! We both placed complaints with paypal.
At least I have the so-so Kennedy's, the other member may be holding the empty bag!

I bring this up because, like Ron, who I have had a few large (for me) trades that were dependant on trust, I have also felt safe trusting other members here. Although there may be a few, I cannot think of anyone, until recently, that would loose their reputation here for a deal gone bad. For a collector, the knowledge base, the friendship-even if it is only over the 'net, and the GREAT DEALS here should out-weigh the small amout of money you would scam.

Not anymore, now I look at how long they have been members before I decide to deal with them, unless it's a coin I REALLY want, but that hasn't happened yet!
Is this board now a target for scam artist?

  • Would the user ratings in our profiles help weed this kind of thing out? We would need to be active in rating other members.....

Newbies wouldn't have much of a rating & I doubt scammers would hang around long enough to have much of a rating either.

Unfortunately the user rating will not help. You can only rate someone once ever.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    .
Several other dealers and I were discussing this member via PM. The photos DID NOT match the descriptions of the coins offered. His 65DMPL Morgans were not close to 65 much less DMPL. We were very concerned about his "MS63" three cent nickel, also. Every new member deserves a chance, but you need to look at the pics closely.

    Ron,
Thanks for the heads up on the other guy!

I really believe someone should participate on the discussion boards for a while before selling on this board, especially when it comes to expensive items. Unfortunately, for every one of these scams, there are probably 500 trades that go off fine. I've bought and sold many coins here without any problem, but I am picky with who I will deal with. I won't send someone hundreds of dollars who is new and only has a few posts, all items for sale here.

  • Is this board a target for scam artists? You bet!

Luckily there has not been much of a problem to date, but we all need
to be cautious in our dealings, particularly with new members.

I was just thinking, this scammer isn't too bright. If his scam worked, eventually the victim would contact this bullion dealer. The bullion dealer would have a record of where he shipped the bullion.
  • RNCHSNRNCHSN Posts: 2,609 ✭✭✭
I had this same thought. It would work, however, if this person kept moving around the country, using different dealers as he moved.

It's one thing to deal with a forum member with a year or more of experience with a known track record. But unless a newbie has iron clad references, it would be money up front imo. Let the newbie take the risk. Most of the forum members can supply a list of references 2 pages long. The newbie should be able to handle that or go elsewhere.

Roadrunner, good point, I tried that once & the newbie would not take me up on the offer...go figure!

Eric & Ron, could the shipments from the dealer be shipped uninsured, to a bogus name? If no one has to sign for the shipment.....
Probably could be proven in court (I guess) but I think it would be tougher to prove.

I don't know Augie, every bullion dealer I have dealt with has sent the order either blue label insured or registered.

Roadrunner pretty much summed it up in who to deal with here. I tend to stick with members who participate on the discussion boards, so a guy who only makes a few posts on the BST board won't affect me. I still don't like the idea, and hope Carol has got wind of this and banned the slimeball.

I agree completely. As far as I am concerned, the newbies who post first to the BST board are not the ones that I would want to be dealing with. The burden is on them to have references and to prove they are on the up-and-up.

Sometimes there is no substitute for a good butt whipping...which I am pretty sure is what is called for here. Predators like this feel there are no consequences to their attempted fraud so they figure 'why not try it'. I hope they try it with the wrong person.

    Dukie,

Thanks for the info on this guy.

Although his pos. feedback % is a tad low, multiple negs from 1 buyer/seller can really hurt that %, I know, one seller neg'ed me multiple time because I gave neutral rating to him for very high shipping.

What really worries me is his private feedback & 12 bid retractions in the last 6 months!!!

Hope there was insurance or confirmed delivery on that package!

    He's on my block(head) list.

People, trust ishould not automatically be assumed because a person is a Forum Member.

Anyone can become a mamber of this Forum. Trust is earned thru time on the board and many

honorable dealings and references by other Forum members you know and respect. While almost all

of the Forum members are honest, caring fellow collectors, there are always those few con artists floating

around. Good luck in future dealings.
