    If it's real, MS62.

It looks like it may have suffered from some staple scratches during storage.

ANACS would probably slab it as MS60 net, scratched.

I don't see any luster for MS. Looks like an au or a polished MS coin.

I know its blown up but the scratch across the bust may kill the grade.
    Pcgs 58-61
    Anacs probably scratched net 60.

I don't see any rub, so I won't say it's AU...but I don't see complete luster, so I don't want to call it MS, either.

Still, it's one heck of a coin if it's authentic. Dahlonega gold is always sought after, much like CC Morgans.
  • imageThanks for the advice. I am sure that it is authentic. Purchased from Bruce Amspacher in 1983.

If you got it from Bruce, you're in good shape where authenticity is concerned. Whether it's MS or AU would depend on the luster and whether you can see any rub when moving the coin around in a light.

I don't think that scratch is all that bad. I could see it in a PCGS MS-62 holder. A very nice coin, worth having it graded.

That's a coin I would send to ANACS.
If it's real and even with the damage it's a tough coin.
Might just bring a good price at auction.

The highest graded so far for that year/mm is 1 ms63 at pcgs and 1 ms63 at ngc.
Below is the information from the Dahlonega gold web site.

    1857-D
    Mintage: 2,364

The 1857-D quarter eagle has an above average strike, well perserved surfaces, and frosty luster that gives the date great eye appeal. Original, uncleaned specimens have coloration ranging from bright yellow-gold to medium rose-gold. A great type coin because of its low mintage and availablity of examples that can be found with a pleasing appearance. Less than 100 specimens survive with less than 12% being Mint State.
  • First of all imageand I think it will go AU 53
