Holy cow, Upper Deck Legends baseball has 300 card AUTO set

Just got the solicitation from Upper Deck for 2004 Upper deck Legends: Timeless Teams. The autograph set has 300 cards, inserted two per box ($90 SRP box). Every ten box case will have three dual AUTO's numbered to 150 or less, one triple AUTO numbered to 75 or less, one six player game used card or one five player autographed card, and one regular set parallel numbered to 5. This stuff should be one of the hottest products of the year, it will come out August 27th.

Do you think this will be another one of the great hobby autograph sets that collectors will be chasing down for the next few years?

  • Yeah, I'm torn between this and Playoff Throwback Threads. Havin' a hard time deciding which way to go because both products look to be loaded and reasonably priced. image

Kall, do you know if the cards will be signed on a sticker or on the card? Have you heard anything about the Legends set for hockey? I like the old '97 Legends autograph set, and I'm a hockey fan, so I think I might pick up a box of the Legends hockey. I think autographs are supposed to be 1/pack for the hockey, do you know how much the boxes will be (and how many packs)? If you have any more info for either the baseball or the hockey set, I would like to hear the details.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.
  • These cards have the signature on the card, not stickers for both sets. The SP legendary Hockey will be $25 SRP per pack with 6 packs per box, I posted another thread on that set. I think this UD Legends baseball will take off very strongly, as it is directed more at Auto's than game used like the Throwback Threads. The only game used in the UD Legends is the one per case, six player bat cards, which will be really low numbered and still probably do well. From the cheklist, I'm sure some major collectors will enjoy the challenge of master sets on the regular AUTO's, doubles, and triples. There are also low numbered Gold parallels of the AUTO's.

Id beware...you can never trust the info that dealers get, it changes and the pics don't represent the
actual cards....they have been showing full Lebron sigs in all their products and those cards never
    existed!

300 card set only means watered down. I mean come on, what legends are they going to include that
haven't already been included in products? Expect more relievers and guys who aren't legends. Gorman
Thomas will be signing 10,000 cards and Ripken will add in 50. The case hits will sell product but once
those are gone this becomes just another SPA.

I will say that 2 autos for 90 bucks is nice, but it UD, they water everything down.

Ok, I'll bite. How much are cases going for and how many boxes/case?
  • It sounds like a hot product especially the “case” card(s). However, it looks like a product that one should either buy the case or nothing at all. With the awesome "case" cards, there should be a slew of "cold" boxes from picked over cases sold by deadbeats on eBay.

edit to add: With the large number of boxes and the multiple case cards, it does like they put in an effort to stop the crooks who stop at the case card and sell the rest at full price. Still it's either a case or nothing for me.
  • envoy98,

I'm seeing presell prices for 20 box cases for around $1,300.00 right now. I don't know what Jason's price is from the wholesaler. If anybody has seen it or can get it cheaper, let me know. image

Damn, 20 box cases...I figured they would be 12 box cases. I guess with that many "hits" though... I think I'll have to go see what I can find. I'll report back my findings. image

Any players in it who have never signed certified autograph cards before will be very hot sellers.

  • Basic cases have 10 boxes per case, Master distributer cases have 20 boxes per.

It looks like there will be 6 solid/big hits per ten box case, so it will be really spread out.

It's tough to say what the long term prospects are for a set like this. The Yankee autograph set sounded OK, because Yankee fans are, like, sooo dedicated, but it had little long-term value in singles or boxes. What is the difference between 2000 Greats of the Game and other editions of that set that caused it to be the one to chase?

On first blush, I like the idea, especially since I won't buy any boxes, but will sit and wait for players I like to get pulled and auctioned. There will probably be a few obscure players who I'd like to get autos from but they won't be worth the price of a pack. The 1976-1983 Phillies are Timeless, aren't they? C'mon, Bake McBride.

Oh, snap, I found a sell sheet in an ebay auction, and it seems to say that there's going to be a triple auto with Mike Schmidt, Manny Trillo and Bake McBride! I'm all over that.

The cards do look beautiful, too. Maybe a pause my UD boycott is warranted.
