Ethical question?

Hello folks. I'm new to the board, and wanted to ask a question. Recently, I've listed a ton of 57 Topps and some 1914 Cracker Jack. Here's my question, is it ok to end an auction early if there are no other bids? I'd never close down an auction that HAD bids, but is it ok if there aren't any bidders? What's your take?

By the way, right now all I have up is a Super Bowl ticket run, under "Dreier Collection." Soon I'll be adding my 52 Topps PSA 8 and 57 Topps PSA 8.

Thanks for your help.

Doug

  • I'd let it ride, everyone tends to bid on it at the last minute. I've sold cards that looked like they were going to end at a few bucks until the last 5 minutes when the price sky rocketed. Alot of people tend to wait till the very last minute. I do....

    PS welcome to the board!

  • I understand the concept of letting it ride, but would it be unethical to end the auction? I'm leaning towards it not, as no one had made a bid.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm enjoying reading the board.

NO bids and ending an auction is fine. You may "miss out" on people that have "Snipes" but that is their tough luck. And possibly yours. If you have a "buyer" I say end them (IF there are no bids). Its not "unethical" unless there are bids.

    Doug,

Welcome to the boards !!! I would say that if there are no bids and you are uncomfortable with it,then end it.It is your to sell and if there are no bids, ethics don't come into play.I do know that there are many on these boards that snipe and the ending price might surprise you.I almost always snipe and know of quite a few here that do also.It might be of some value to search the thread archives for "snipe and ending an auction" threads. There have been many very informative and opinionated discussions here.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.

Hey Doug, welcome to the loony bin. Is the problem that you didn't place a reserve or minimum and now you're worried only one person will snipe and win for $1? If that's the case, I would sure end. Nobody has a right to complain if they didn't bid.
  • WHat happened was this . . . I listed two cards, and about an hour later, received an email with an offer I couldn't refuse. About three times as much as I would have expected originally. I closed the auctions, received payment, and sent the cards on their way.

I really don't like to close auctions early, and would never do so if there was a bid on the item. In this case, I felt it was warranted. There were no ebay-ers watching the item. I just wanted to ask the PSA board and see what the general consensus was.

I really appreciate everybody's help. I didn't want to do the wrong thing.

Here are some other questions that should be on another thread. I have some incredible sets. For example, I have three (3!) complete sets of the Yankee Signatures from a few years back. None, however, are graded. My 1894 Mayo set is spectacular, but the only graded card I have is the Mayo Anonymous (of which I have 2, and won't sell). I have many, many high-end sets like this that aren't graded. What are the benefits of grading these cards? They're secure and on display. Many of these sets would cost me thousands and thousands to grade, but I'm not sure I see much benefit. Ideas?

Hell some people around here think its fine to end an auction even when there are bids active......

  • Don't mean to hi-jack this threat but roastedcat- WHAT THE F IS THAT???? My God, I hope it isn't any relation..

I also think it's OK to end a auction. It's still your property, and if Ebay didn't like it or it was "unethical" then you wouldn't be able to end it.. I have no problem with people who do, frustrating yes!!
