Hi everybody. Been lurking for a couple of months, and finally today I'm moved to actually post. Quick background: I started collecting when I was 10, and for a few years I was pretty into it. I joined the ANA, toured the Philly mint, went to a bunch of coin shows, put together a fun little type collection (nothing really valuable - just stuff I thought was cool). I reached the point where the coins I wanted were simply too much money for a kid my age, and that kind of turned me off. So for the next 15 years I went into numismatic hibernation. With the exception of a few items I purchased direct from the mint (some proof sets, a few SBA proofs), I didn't add to my collection at all over that time period.
Fast forward to a couple of months ago, when my mother-in-law decided to clean out her attic. Amongst the detritus was a box of coins, and I volunteered to catalog what I found and see if there was anything of value (and no, before you get all excited, this is not a sad attempt to sell anything to anybody). Nothing of real value - it was mostly a bunch of steel cents, couple of three cent silvers, some well-worn Barber and Mercury dimes - but that's all it took to get me hooked again.
Since then, I've spent a lot of time poking around on ebay, lurking on this board, and just generally trying to get back up to speed. Things have certainly changed over the past fifteen years. Back then, slabs didn't even enter into my consciousness (though I have a vague recollection that certification existed at the time - I just didn't care). This whole registry thing is an entirely new animal. I wasn't aware of CAM/DCAM designations either. For myself, there appear to be two major changes which will enhance the collecting experience: one, the existence of the Internet (I've been an avid ebay user for five years, I just never used it to buy coins), and two, I have a little disposable income to play around with (though my wife may beg to differ).
This seems like a good, active board, with a lot of knowledgeable and helpful people. Entertaining, too, what with the intermittent flame-fests (i.e. that 100proof1957 ebay thread - I can't believe I read the whole thing). I was going to post some specific questions, mostly about Lincoln proofs, but I'll save that for another thread. I'll leave one question in this thread: Anybody know of a good shop or two in the central Jersey area? And are there any decent shows around here? The Coin World listings are less than illuminating.

Hutz: Now don't you worry, Mrs. Simpson, I - uh-oh. We've drawn Judge Snyder.
Marge: Is that bad?
Hutz: Well, he's kind of had it in for me, since I accidently ran over his dog. Actually, replace `accidently' with `repeatedly', and replace `dog' with `son'.

Oh yeah...I'm from the Southern part of the Gahhhhhhhhhdin state. However, coin shows are far and few in between around here. There is one held in Parsippany often. You might contact or PM a fellow board member by the name of Jeremy (airplanenut).
Good luck with your renewed interest and in getting your wife on board.

Welcome aboard! It's amazing how many collectors, myself included, collected as a kid and then stopped for many years. I think
that if you come back to it, then it's in your blood!
Enjoy!
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
Out of curiosity, how did you find these message boards?
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
Yes, razorface & RYK, I've seen references to the Parsippany show. I don't live in that area, but I'll look into it. I'm a stone's throw from the Garden State Exhibit Center, and it seems like there's got to be a show there at some point.

Well, kranky, to tell you the truth, I'm not really sure. I think I was poking around on Google for a price guide, ended up at PCGS, and then while exploring the site I stumbled on the boards. That was a while ago. I've been lurking for a couple of months now.

Welcome! It's good to see a newbie who knows the rules off hand
As far as Central NJ--I'm in Summit... there's a small shop here (Horizon Rare Coin) with mostly more expensive stuff. In South Orange is Ye Olde Curiosite Shoppe, which has lots of cool stuff besides coins, and the shop is almost like a museum. There's also a shop in downtown Scotch Plains, but I can't think of the name... lots of inventory, but I've been there once a few years ago, so can't speak for it today (kinda hard to get there when you can't drive; now that I can, I'll probably check it out soon).
The first Sunday of each month is the Parsippany show, which gets around 80 dealers and is a very nice show--lots of good stuff, from cheap to really expensive. I usually go, but I was away in July, and will be away for the August show, as well.
Next weekend (Friday and Saturday) there's a show at the Grand Hyatt at Grand Central Station in NYC--it's a new show, but it looks like there will be quite a nice selection, albeit not a huge show. There will be some great auctions, as well. I plan to go Friday, and likely Saturday, as well.
PM me or post if you have any more questions
Jeremy

That's the Somerset area, right? The yearly GSNA show is in Somerset and is a great 3-day show... I don't know about more frequent shows, though.
parker;
Where exactly is the above place?

Just for fun, I ran a search on Yahoo Yellow Pages for the dealer geographically closest to me, and it gave me the name of Century Coin on Route 18 in East Brunswick. Anybody know anything about that one?

LOL Ole Rt.18! Brings back memories. I flipped a 18 wheeler on RT.18
You really can't go wrong here as there are lots of good folks and tons
of valuable information!

Good luck in getting back into coins, and keep reading. Lot's of useful information here. I'm in LA so I can't help you with coin shows in your area.
Indeed! Fortunately, there were no injuries. This is precisely the reason it flipped, to avoid jack-knifing 3 lanes of tailing traffic. Evasive action was taken...Telephone pole and flip, or head-on into the river. I chose the flip.

How do they breathe in the slabs?

Well, as we know, no slab is truly airtight...
Man, that gives me one pretty horrifying image. PETA would not be pleased.

The Simpsons are appreciated around here and few shows have more coin references.

Thanks for that, err, heartwarming welcome I'm not sure I'd peg myself as a Lincoln proof collector quite yet - I'm still just trying to figure out what I'm into. It's a big numismatic world.

I'm gonna have to clean my keyboard now, it's got root beer all over it.
"Exactly."
