    The grader at ANACS gets the coin... looks at it.... "Where the heck am I going to net grade this baby to?"

  • Looks like a flattened beer cap from Colonial Beer Company.

  • I have some similar large cents. I call them "gear cents", but it is my understanding that these were actually fabricated to be used to seal the edge of pie crust. The pie maker would roll the coin around the rim of the pan to seal the crust. More than one person has explained the pie sealer theory to me.

    The "pie sealers" were usually holed in the center. This allowed for attachment of a handle.

    True. I cant quite figure out cohodk's piece. Perhaps it was an unfinished pie sealer? It is one of the nicest examples that I have ever seen. What a great date and nice detail!

    Thats interesting info about the pie sealers. I never thought about that.

    I can see that old farmer going through his penny jar .....AH, I'll just use this 1795 that wasn't an important year!
