All I know is that it's not US Mint produced. Most likely a memorial novelty.

  • Does the mint make the medals for the military?

The mnt has produced some of them in the past, and I believe some of them were contracted out to some private firms. I don't know if the mint currently makes military decorations (the correct term) or not.
  • Well, technically, the military has both Decorations and Medals, and the mint makes neither.
Decorations are personal awards for merit or valor, while medals are awarded for service, or participation in a particular campaign.

In the past (pre-WW2) the mint did produce some of the campaign medals.

Currently, they are contracted out to the lowest bidder, and I might add that modern production medals are junk compared to coins. (IMOH)
You can see my website for more info on US Military Decorations and Medals. If you want to see an example of the junk we award our military today, check out the Kosovo Campaign medal or the Humanitarian Service medal.

    We CAN do better right?

  • was awarded mine after the fact. Got out of the service right after Desert Strotm, had to send in a letter to get medals. They showed up nine months later in a brown bubble mailer in a plain white cardboard box. I guess this is appreciation.
