Worst Baseball Trades....??

The Baltimore Sun is running a lot of different articles about Orioles history, as the O's celebrate their 50th season. They printed what they thought was the "all time" bad trade the club made.

I recall Glenn Davis being a major bomb, but I didn't recall who they traded to get him from the Astros, where he was averaging 29 HR's a year over 5 years. The O's got him in 1991, and he ended up playing 185 games over the next 3 seasons, hitting a total of 24 HR's, then never again played in the majors! He earned $7 million a year in 92 and 93.

They traded:
Curt Schilling - 2 time 20 game winner, 6 seasons 15+ victories.
Steve Finley - 7- 20+ HR seasons, 5 times 100+ runs scored.
Pete Harnisch - won 95 games post-trade, inc 2-16 win yrs.

Any other bad deals come to mind??
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

Off the top of my head I think that:

    Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson
Ryne Sandberg, Larry Bowa and Keith Moreland for Ivan Dejesus (I think Bowa was in that trade)
Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps (thanks for the reminder Mr. Costanza)

Collecting anything and everything relating to Roger Staubach
  • Herschel Walker for what became the Dallas Cowboys entire starting lineup

One the hardly EVER gets mentioned is

Rafael Palmeiro traded by the Chicago Cubs with Drew Hall and Jamie Moyer to the Texas Rangers for Mitch Williams, Paul Kilgus, Steve Wilson, Curtis Wilkerson, Luis Benitez (minors), and Pablo Delgado (minors).

    Also --

Willie McGee was traded by the New York Yankees to the St. Louis Cardinals for Bob Sykes

    And another Sosa deal --

Sammy Sosa traded by the Texas Rangers with Wilson Alvarez and Scott Fletcher to the Chicago White Sox for Harold Baines and Fred Manrique.

what do you think the RANGERS think about the A-rod deal from Seattle....

especially since they have seen such success after trading him to NY

Arod wasn't traded to Texas -- he was signed as a free agend -- so there was no deal with Seattle.

  • Bobs- I agree with you on the Palmeiro trade. It was short term gold for the Cubs as they would not have won the '89 Divisional title without Williams, Wilson and Wilkerson. But long term they were stuck with a powerless singles and doubles hitting media darling (Grace) who never had as many RBI's in one year as Palmeiro averaged over many.

    Other trades:

Padres trade Ozzie Smith to the Cardinals for Gary Templeton

Phillies have a slew of them:

    Fergie Jenkins trade
    Ryne Sandberg trade
    Julio Franco trade

the list goes on and on...
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
