Why grade with anyone other than PSA, SGC, GAI, or BGS?

Why grade with anyone other than PSA, SGC, GAI, or BGS?

If these are the best, why would anyone use any other service? The cards don't sell well and they aren't guaranteed authentic/unaltered in most cases and are overgraded. How can these companies even survive?

I just don't get it...

Any thoughts?

  • I think one reason is EVERYONE loves Gem Mint "10" cards.. The average collector just wants a "10", you know what I mean? I LOVE "10's" also, but they better be in a PSA, SGC, or GAI holder. In fact most of my BGS 9.5's I'm selling or have sold. I just not a big fan of Beckett like I use to be. I guess the longer I'm in the hobby- THE SMARTER I'VE BECOME!!

Why you another service? its simple... because your card is either a fake, or its been altered, which raw on ebay might sell for $5 or $10, so they pay $5 to get it graded and it comes back a 10, and sells for $50, while a PSA 10 of the same card might sell for $300

It is extremely simple, and it all comes down to one word: MONEY
  • There might be other considerations other than money......in Canada, KSA is an alternative, if a Canadian collector wants to avoid potential customs/cross-border hassles.

  • I've been thinking of submitting a bunch of my under value $25.00 cards to "Grademycard.com" and request holder only at 99 cent a card. No grade, just having the card sealed in the holder. I don't really care much for the grade anymore, it's a bunch of nonsense. This way, if I ever sell the card on ebay, it will still be a card in raw form without a grade. The buyer can always crack it out of the holder if they wanted to submit to the grading company of their choice. Also when shipping the card in a bubble mailer, the card will be protected, and by adding a piece of card board in front and back and putting it in the bubble mailer, I'll be able to add a delivery confirmation to it for tracking purposes. Because the post office won't let you add a confirmation unless it is 3/4 thick. Sure it cost me 99 cents just to have it slabbed, submit a 100 cards it's only 99 bucks. vs having to wait for PSA $5.00 special once a year. It's just a thought, I haven't done it yet, been thinking about it to protect the card from getting damaged.

    What do you guys think?

What's the point, Jery? Just sell them raw, and save the $99. You might actually get more bids on them that way, than putting them in suspect holders (even if not to grade them). Buy a box of screwdowns and call it a day.

I've run into two middle aged men who know very little about baseball cards (except what they remember from when they were kids) and the sense that "old cards are worth a mint!".

Both of them heard that "grading" cards could turn hundred dollar cards into THOUSAND dollar cards so they both sent in a couple dozen cards to the grading company that they happen to find an ad for in a magazine. And in one guys case - it was the cheapest of the three grading companies advertised.

So, now one of them has a couple dozen cards in "USA" holders and the other one has cards in "Gem Mint" holders. I didn't have the heart to tell them anything more about the graded card market.

So, sometimes its not malice that puts these cards into putrid holders - sometimes its ignorance...

How great is it that all those subpar companies have sprung up just to cash in on the fact that some people are less informed or are inclined to try to pass off altered cards as unaltered and high-grade?

Gotta love the business plan built on the idea that consumers are stupid and inclined to defraud. image

  • I realize I'm a little late to the party on this conversation, but I would like to chime in that the other grading companies are around primarily to prey upon uninformed 'collectors'..... and give more 'creditability' to those shady deals that transpire on Shop At Home.

The thought is..... of course a graded card is better than a raw card. And a 10 (or 10.0) GEM MINT or Pristine card is the best graded card. Boy..... I'll take a DOZEN of those SUPER RARE 1987 Topps Barry Bonds Blank Back Rookie Test Cards GEM MINT/BCCG/PRO 10.... what a deal.

I'd like to say to suggest too that at least a portion of the cards that make it into holders for these companies (and lets include BGS/BCCG in this group too) are submitted internally & then sold through a variety of outlets - purely to make money for the company.

The talk of the conflict of interest for BGS and the fact that it sells as well as grades cards is an old subject; however, should be mentioned again here just in case someone is finding this information for the first time.
