This Ebay deal seems fishy to me

partagaspartagas Posts: 2,056 ✭✭✭
This coin I earmarked for bidding sold way under value. Said to be located in Chicago.

1858 ngc 65 25c

Now it miraculousy is back up by a different seller in another city, Las Vegas. The other auction ended days ago, but the seller just copied the other guys auction. Is he trying for a quick flip or does something smell funny.

I tried contacting the seller the first time, with no response. I will try again this time. It looks like a nice coin.

Second listing 1858 NGC 25c

One thing's for sure -- if I just paid $1,500 for a coin, I'm not going to immediately turn around and start the bidding at one buck with no reserve...

Sorry- couldn't resist the opportunity to post it since it's the same year/coin! image

Something does sound weird there. Maybe the guy has an alt ID on eBay?

I think it's the same guy. PCGS Price guide puts it at $1300 in 64 and $4600 in 65. CW Values has it at $1500 in 64 & no price listed for 65.
Something must be up with this.

Oh boy, there are some people being lined up to be hustled by this "seller". Look at some of his other auctions. Serious currency sellers do not call a CGA $1000 note a "$1000 bill".

This has all the earmarks of a hijacked account. The "seller" hasn't had any feedback left for him in over a year and has zero feedback as a seller. All of a sudden he has 5 auctions running for expensive items, each of which says he's in a big hurry to sell and offers to sell outside of ebay if the price is right. Someone broke into the seller's account, stole some auctions from other sellers, and is hoping to grab some fast cash. Auctions say to contact the seller regarding payment methods. I'll bet he will insist on Western Union or a money order.

I'll bet all 5 auctions will turn out to be ripped off from other legit sellers.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Good point Kranky, I didn't think of that.

<< <i>Please, email me if you can offer a reasonable "buy now" price for this coin. >>

I copied this from his auction.

Isn't that fee avoidance?? Sure does send up red flags to me.

A little more detective work shows a pattern. The '58 seated quarter was first listed by jag2000xl and then relisted by "npavlica," who as has been said, has been inactive for a year to now and suddenly has five high-ticket items for auction.

Among them is an 1857-S eagle in SEGS MS-61 -- which also was sold in an auction ending July 10 by user jag2000xl.

Two of the paper money items "npavlica" is offering were originally sold by "deepwoods2_57" -- like jag2000xl, listed as being from Chicago. And these, too, ENDED ON JULY 10.

Something is almost definitely rotten here.

  • I just sent the seller the following email:

Why are you auctioning a coin that you don't own?

This is my standard question for these nitwits...

Update: The ebay user "npavlica" has been NARU'd.
