PCGS vs. NGC grading of Peace/Morgans....equal??

What are you Silver dollar guys seeing lately? Are their grading standards equal, about equal or loose as a goose? Thanks, Chris. I am particularly interested in your recent submissions.

  • IMO, NGC is the closest to PCGS, but they are not PCGS. Some NGC Morgans will cross as is, but some will cross with one point drop (in uncirculated grades).

I agree. I figure NGC about 1/2-grade lower in both circulated and Mint State grades. The low-end coins are the ones you have to watch out for!
    When in doubt, don't.

I've had pretty good luck with NGC coins, almost all have crossed. But I am very picky with what I have bought in their holders, and haven't tried to cross anything in 66 or above. It does seem to me that there is a big difference in MS66 and higher Morgans, about half of those I have seen would go a point lower at PCGS, so I would agree with the half a point comment.
  • I guess all would be good if we got grades like MS-60.5, MS-61.5, MS-62.5, etc.

    Morgans -- I dunno

But with Peace $, I think NGC is .5-1 point easier on the common dates, but actually more stringent on the semis and keys. Also, I've had NGC downgrade 1 or 2 nicely toned Peace $ when they were crossed from PCGS slabs. I think PCGS has a tendency to bump for nice color.

  • I don't know about morgans, but with peace dollars in the lower grades
63-64 common dates they are very close, I went 4 for 4 on ngc to pcgs
crossing at the same grade with these, but you are not talking about high dollar
coins so that may have had some impact.

On recent submissions, which is the question, they are equal.

In the market, ms/66+ coins do better in pcgs holders. Not necessarily because the coins are graded tougher, but more because of perception. The general consensus would be that pcgs is a bit tighter with these higher graded coins.

My last submission to NGC, which included 12 Morgans, I would say they are quite tight. image
