    ICG is fourth.

  • It's my understanding that high grade (67, 68, 69, 70) coins, both business strike and proof, in ICG holders don't compare favorably with PCGS or NGC-graded coins.

For circulated classic coins, though, they are pretty close in their grading to the other services. That's what I've heard, anyway.

actually, I like coins in ICG holders sometimes better than ANACS, not only for the attractiveness of the holder, but also because the price to actual coin ratio is sometimes more favorable on the ICG coin, because people are biased against the lower tier holders. this is also sometimes true of SEGS and PCI coins.

    I agree... fourth.

  • Here is one small opinion: As a newbie, I bought a bunch of common date MS-64 Morgans in ICG slabs back when they first hit the market....I dug them out of the safe last winter and all seem to be accurately graded. Not worth cracking out, so I'll leave them in the slabs for now.

I like ICG better than the top 3. they grade ok and I just love the slabs with the little finger tabs

I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

They are reasonably well respected. Heritage, for example, will include ICG slabbed coins in their auctions without attributing them as "raw".

<< <i>I know PCGS, NGC, and ANACS are considered the top three and some of the others (I won't mention who) consistently overgrade. My question (as a novice) is how does ICG rate in most people's minds? I have only one ICG coin and it seems pretty accurately graded. >>

You're asking in the wrong place. Being a PCGS board, you can expect an overwhelming bias towards PCGS, and disdain for ICG. If you want non-kool-aid-influenced opinions, you'll have to ask this sort of question on a neutral discussion group.

Learn to grade and make your own decisions. Only then can YOU rate the professional grading services.

  • My favorite Washington Quarter I own is in an ICG slab.

I had the fellows here take a look at it, but my scanning wasn't so hot.

    Anyway, it's a 1948 ICG slabbed quarter, MS67. With shipping I probably didn't pay $50 for it.

Bought the coin, not the holder, so to speak.

But, I don't own many ICGs 3 or 4 maybe.

ICG seems to grade as accurately as the other reputable companies on pre-1964 coins. I have 2 1799 dollars in ICG holders that look excellent for their assigned grades. On modern coins, they give out the MS70 too often.

I don't agree, Bob. IMO, a lot of people are here because this is the most active coin board with a lot of knowledgeable people contributing. I, for one, have no allegiance to PCGS. I've only submitted coins to them once.

I primarily collect modern cameo proofs. I find that ICG is a distant fourth compared to PCGS, NGC, and Anacs. It took me a couple of years to figure out that the ICG grade is one to two points higher than PCGS and cameo/dcam designation is iffy. One example (of several) is a 1961 Washington in an ICG 69 Dcam holder ultimately ended up in a PCGS 67 Dcam holder.

I am now down to exactly zero coins in ICG holders.

But, I still look at ICG coins because I now have enough confidence in my grading ability to find nice coins and not overpay for the ICG grade.

On a positive note, they did stand behind their product when they made a grading mistake. They mistook a Proof 1970-s large date cent for a small date. After a month or so of correspondence, they made it right with me.

  • Flamino, I don't see any kool-aid opinions yet. Most of the posts on this thread indicate that ICG is a legitimate grading company (with the exception of ultar modern coins)

  • Every once in awhile, someone sends a batch of ICGs over to have them crossed at PCGS or NGC. You might want to look at some of those threads if you want to see what the cross rate is.
