PCGS and PL designations

keojkeoj Posts: 980 ✭✭✭
A quick set of questions;

1) Is there a PCGS definition as to what quantifies PL and DMPL on Morgans?

2) Does PCGS attribute any other MS series (other than Morgans) with PL?

3) Has anyone ever asked PCGS if they would consider any other series?

Thanks.

    1. Yes, 2 to 4 inches. DMPL is 4+
    2. Only morgans to my knowledged
    3. Yes, people have asked.

    I think that is the ANACS definition.

    PCGS is 4+ inches for PL, and 8+ inches for DMPL. Plus the coin has to have that "look". So lots of ANACS PL's and DMPL's will not cross.
  • PCGS asks for 2"+ on a PL dollar and 8" on a DM. While some other services do acknowledge PL on other series, PCGS does this only for Morgan dollars. I'm sure they've considered it at one time or another.

    Now, a question of my own, does PCGS only give these designations to deserving MS coins, or will they slab AUs as PL/DM as well, provided they meet reflectivity requirements?

  • I think this is obvious, but the PL or DMPL mirror definition must apply to BOTH sides of the coin. Quite often a DMPL is missed because one side or the other does meet the definition.

    No, PCGS will not grade a circulated coin as PL or DMPL. I owe a beautiful 1890-CC AU-53 PL in a old PCI slab which is accurately graded. I would like to get my hands on the person that put it into circulation.
