My wifes uncle has been carrying this Peace dollar since he came back from WWII.He'll be 82 this week.

I wonder if there is a grade less than PO01,maybe "smooth 01"?image

What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?
  • I think the only grade below PO01 is Cull 00

Technically it'd be basal state. But it won't grade that. Now you need to AT it and sell it on ebay.
  • Ask your uncle if he remembers the date of that Peace dollar. Inquiring minds want to know.image

I saw an otherwise nice 1928 with a big fat hole over Liberty's head, once.

Even I, The Holey of Holeys, had to grit my teeth over that one.

For several years, I have complained about the lack of established grade levels for low grade coins. I have many "average circulated" Barber coins and can now distinguish between an AG 3.0 , AG 3.3, AG 3.5, and AG 3.7.

However, this Peace Dollar recalls the comments of a favorite dealer I met again at a show last month. He believes that there should be grades below PO-01. I may not have the numbers right, but there should be grades like TY-0.7 (identifiable only by type), DE-0.5 (identifiable only by denomination), and ME-0.2 (identifiable only by metal) above the grade of SC-00.

Here is my TY-0.7 Indian quarter eagle, although it would not slab due to the solder.imageimage

Here is my lowest grade, undamaged type coin. When I first saw this in an Indiana coin shop 17 years ago I thought it was a porous blank planchet. When the right lighting hits it, it is identifiable as a 2c piece.imageimage

Did someone mention a low grade 1928?! (Not a PO01... but pretty close!)

Notice that the eagle contiunes to hold it's head up high and proud through the years of wear and tear. An inspiration to us all.
