Proof question

If a coin is proof, but it gets scratched, worn, fingerprinted, ect. what is it designated? Would it still be considered proof? How can one tell if a coin once was proof, but has worn down to about Fine condition?

Yes, it's still considered a proof and would be what is called "impaired". Worn down to fine is going to be tough with a lot of coins, but the squared rims might still be an indication.

Also date/MM combos can tell proof or not. eg. Late date S mint coins.

Since "proof" is a method of striking, a proof is always a proof, regardless of condition. But, like Russ says, if it has seen a lot of circulation, or been otherwise impaired, grading can be somewhat difficult. At any rate, it is technically possible to have a coin grade PR06.imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

  • What's the lowest proof coin anyone has seen slabbed? I think I have seen some late 1800s proof coins that circulated and now are slabbed.

I saw an 1873 two cent piece in PR-4. Easy to tell it was a proof as it was a proof-only issue.
