Cost to put together a complete circ Morgan Set

I am thinking of trying to put together a complete circulated Morgan Dollar Set to stick into an album. Can anyone give me a rough idea of what this would cost. I figure if I omit the 93-s, that would probably save $1,000 or so. I'm not sure if the greyseet lists bid/ask for complete sets of Morgans or not? Any help would be appreciated.

About 10-20000 dollars according to the PCGS price guide.

    Hi!
Depends on how circulated you want to go.
If you're talking AU, then it will be pricey.
If you're talking F-VF then you can get most commons for $15-20 or less.
Key dates will still run you near $100 or more.
Figure there's about 97 coins if you want just dates & MM (no varieties) and you will be looking at $2000-5000.

Unless my math is really bad...

I'm going for MS in common dates and we'll see about 93-95 and some CC's later on down the road.

    Good Luck!!!image

    Gonfunko-
$20000 seems a tad high, no?
    Unless you're looking at EF-AUs.

Maybe $5000 is the lower end and $10000 the higher end?

I thought it seemed high, but I just took it from the PCGS price guide. You can easily expect to pay several thousand, though.
  • Thanks for the help. 3000-5000 is what I figured. My only problem is that I think it will probably be difficult to put together a matched set. It's almost impossible to find some of the CC coins in circulated grades. On the other hand dates like the 83-S and 01 are ultra common in circulated grades, but rare in UNC. I probably will end up having the whole range of grades from G-VG for dates like to the 89-CC or 95-O and UNC for some for some of the common dates and CC's. I look at this as a long term project so we'll just have to see how it goes.

    3000-5000 is what I figured

This is a "Ballpark figure" of what it cost me when I went the raw route w/o the 93-S, 94-P & 95. When I sold the raws and went to slabs, I actually made a decent buck on the sales. However, when I sold the slabbed I took a beating. Now, it's "Back to the ole drawing board" collecting raws again to fill Whitman books.image Sad, but true!

Of the collection you contemplate putting together, the `93-s would be the most exciting. I would therefore start with that coin. Once you have that it is a predicament of diminishing returns. If you are looking to spend only $5000 for the set, you may spend 40% of that on the first coin. After you buy your second coin, if there is a drop off in your enthusiasm, I would reassess whether your goal; you may want to aim a little higher.

  • I was thinking around $10,500ish.

razorface1027: How come you did so much better selling the raws rather than the slabs? Seems the opposite would be true.

lava: Starting with the 93-s is probably a great idea. Wish I'd have thought of it. Too late now!!

I say it was the timing. I delved the slabbed arena too quickly and haphazardly and took a beating. When it came time to sell, reluctantly I'll add, the timing just wasn't right.image
