1952 Topps Mantle PSA 1

Levi is auctioning this PSA 1 off...

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 1

As one who is interested in obtaining a PSA 1, I've been trying to estimate how much one should cost. Being that this one currently has no bids, I really can't say whether Levi's opening bid amount of $2,475 is reasonable.

Assuming this doesn't sell this time around, what do you think a fair price would be for this card?

i wouldnt buy it for that, Although, I have bought from 707 in the past, He is a reputable dealer so no problem there but that starting bid is scary for a psa1.image

    John:

Levi typically is not that flexible on prices. They have the best inventory around - especially of collector grade material. Not to mention Levi's awesome personal collection. But that being said - he has a pretty robust business, and his model seems to work. Large, extensive inventory combined with high prices - even if he only flips a small percentage of what he has in any given quarter - he is making huge margins, generates good cash flow, and does not risk losing the breadth of his inventory.

I can't think of anyone else who routinely has a selection of PSA 1 - 8 of nearly every Mantle card.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Maybe I'm just dreaming, but my limit for a PSA 1 is $1,500. I've done business with Levi, too, and I know he's a good guy. And as far as PSA 1's go, that's a nice one. So part of me doesn't want to see it sell for $2,500, but on the other hand, I'd say more power to him if I already had one!

Wow, and he wants $2,250 for the more beat-up one. Looks like my $1,500 dream may remain just that!
  • Low grade Mantle's have really exploded in price over the last few years (PSA 1's roughly doubling to tripling from $1000-$1200). For a "collector's grade" they may have gone up the most. I think most of this is thanks to the countless number of losers/scam artists with their "grandfather's collections" of fake '52 Topps Mantle's – they are making the real ones look more scarce then they really are. Also due to the scammers, even the pathetic looking ’52 Topps Mantle’s have to be graded thanks to the ridiculous number of fakes out there.

  • that pic (of the 1500.00 mantle auction just above post)is stolen from a GAI holdered card. if you look closely at it you can see the black gasket near the corners. what a con artist

It is absolutely stolen from another auction. That auction ended last week or the week before. Believe it was Gai 6 or 6.5.
I posted it then-someone else scammed those exact pictures then!!
    Awful.

Oh, auction ended. Some poor sap is going to get taken for $1500+. I emailed him with auction numbers from old auctions using those same scans. This is one reason why big sellers with a good rep will continue to get higher dollars for lower grade cards-I can trust that I'm not going to get taken. I'll pay for that peace of mind.

  • A little faded but worth taking a chance for only $51.00
When submitting a card like this for grading should you put down the value at $50.00 or $2000.00.

"The card was bought as not authentic and I'm selling it as one."

It looks like a part of Timothy Leary's collection. I swear that the eyes on that card follow me as I scroll up and down the page.

I can't remember for sure the grade... but that Mantle stolen scan of the GAI card was either a 6.5 or a 7.5...

my question is this: Who in their right mind would pay $1500 for a Mantle card that is from a seller with 93% feedback, only a 14 score, and has only completed 1 transaction in the last 3 months?

I still contend that ebay could save itself, and paypal (which they own) a TON of $$$$$$$$ if they would hire a card expert to sift through auctions and pull the fakes/stolen scans/scams.

jrinck... not worth the $50 because the card isn't real... well, it probably is a real piece of cardboard, just not a '52 Topps Mantle

That card has been stolen a number of times in various scams. Originally, it was stolen was the GAI slab cropped off, but the corners still showed it was in the slab. Then, someone took that a step further and used a graphic editing program and did a poor job of filling in the corners to make it look unslabbed.

As far as Mantle prices, I've noticed a significant decline in the prices of these cards as more and more potential Mantle buyers use my guide (which I sell on e-bay for a couple bucks), in which I show the different type of fakes, and list all the auctions, past (back to mid-May at the moment) and current, where fake Mantles are for sale. It also allows me to track the prices.

From what I've gathered in doing this, well over 50% of the sales of the fake cards fall through. One seller, sanfranciscobaytrading, is the biggest seller of fake Mantle's, and he always gets the highest prices because he shills every one of his auctions (they're private of course). He consistently runs 2-3 a week. His prices have been dropping though, even with the shills, over 100 would-be Mantle bidders have been educated on spotting the fakes within the past 2 months, and it's killing these fake auctions. Of course, there will always be new suckers who will learn the hard way, and that is unavoidable.
  • a761056. What percent are real? The prices may have dropped for fake cards but the sellers aren't getting killed because their selling fake cards. I searched Ebay for closed 1952 Topps Mantle auctions and sort by highest price. Without going nuts reading the BS storys maybe 10 are real auctions and then a bunch of fake ones selling for >$500.00 and >$200.00 and a bunch >$50.00. How can people buy these things?

Less than 1% of ungraded Mantles on E-bay are real I would say. Very seldom does one appear. Many times auctions appear that are stolen scans of an authentic raw Mantle. Currently, there are a bunch of graded Mantle's up there with expensive B-I-N prices, all being sold by reputable dealers. Within the next 2 weeks, someone will have stolen at least one of those scans, crop it, and try to pull one, and several other jokers will also copy the stolen scan and attempt to run their own auction.

The market on the fakes is plummeting sharply. The obvious fakes used to sell in excess of $1,000 regularly just 1-2 months ago, now they are barely pushing $300-500, and I think there's some shilling behind some of the current prices as well. I intend to continue offering my guide, and I would only guess based on what I've seen over the past couple months since I started it, that prices on fakes will continue to fall as I am able inform more and more potential buyers.

One of the good things about Levi is layaway. Pick a winner and throw the $1500 down on it. I have bought a few cards from him this way. His prices are pretty much right on the money when it comes to 52 Topps Mantles.
