To PayPal or not to PayPal... that is the question

I have had many dealers tell me that they are no longer taking PayPal due to higher expenses and fees. While I know PayPal has been increasing fees, I think many of these sellers are missing a big point here. Buyers like myself don't use paypal only for the convenience or the easy use of credit cards (although I'm sure that is a big factor) we use PayPal sellers for the security. It gives me a much better sense of security when the transaction is being watched by a 3rd party. Also, a seller with good feedback coupled with multiple PayPal transactions, is almost never a scammer. The only eBay problems I have ever had are with non PayPal sellers. With the exception of a select few sellers like DSL, I do not bid on auctions that do not take PayPal. I have been blasted by dealers saying “you are missing out on tons of cards you need by not buying from me", but in my opinion, the sellers are the ones missing out. The buyers don't HAVE to buy, but if you are in the business of selling, you HAVE to sell. Are there any stats. out there to support the use of PayPal over not using it?

Opinions?

Ken

generally speaking I only bid on non-paypal auctions if its an extremely rare card AND, the seller has a very high feedback rating
  • Ditto - with only a few exceptions - Triple S, DSL, Best of Yesterday and some Canadian sellers - we only bid on paypal auctions too. Occasionally I miss one and boy I hate that feeling when you go through check-out and that Check/Money Order flag is the only option.

I've also found paypal great to deal with whenever necessary.

I bid on a lot of low dollar cards where the seller doesn't take PayPal. It's amazing how many of those never result in my getting the cards.

This question comes up every couple of months, and every time, it seems the majority of buyers want PayPal. I am with everyone else, except for Skerbe and DSL, I hesitate if I can't pay that way. I wonder if many sellers realize the few pennies they save probably costs them dollars in the long run...

PayPal is very convenient for the buyers, unless the transaction is over $500. Speaking from experience, you then have VERY little protection.

I receive over 100 PayPal payments a month. These transactions are by far the easiest to track and fill. The Money Orders and personal checks create extra work in my opinion. People also like the immediate gratification of having their items sent right away. The fees I pay are more than offset by the extra business I think I get by being a PayPal Seller.

  • Aside from the protection of PayPal, I also try to use it with a credit card and then the $500 PayPal limit is moot; 100% protection that I have needed on two occasions and the credit card company gave me a 100% credit. I also agree with everyone else that a few of the non-PayPal sellers, sSs, DSC and a couple of others I feel very comfortable with and I realize they are trying to keep their cost down.

For some sellers, it's not about the fees. Like many others, I use to love paypal because of how fast and easy it made everything to sell. Get ripped off by someone using Paypal and you'll quickly change your tunes. Paypal simply does not care if you were 'right' and was scammed. They'll reach right into your balance and take the money out and leave you holding the bag.

Get burned by Paypal and you will realize they are a Painpal.....

I do not accept them. I sell usually about 50 items a month on ebay. Does it cost me some sales, maybe, but compared to the hassle (and fees) of paypal, it is worth it for me.

I have only ever had 1 person complain about it in the last 2 years I have not accepted payments.

I agree that payPal still has some issues that need correcting, but overall it is turned ebay into a very lucrative place to sell your cards. Before PayPal, most transactions were more trouble than they were worth. PayPal makes it quick and easy for the seller(to receive payment and move the merchandise out of inventory) and for the buyer(protected, can pay with CC, receive item in mere days).

Take away Paypal and i don't think we would be seeing some of the realized prices we see now.

    Just my opinion of course,

  • For sellers - like me - who don't want to pay the juice, have a basic, a.k.a. bank account only, PayPal account. Not the best strategy for high volume sellers, but does at least give extra assurance to buyers.

  • As a seller, I accept paypal because it increases the customer base. There are a lot of ebayers that use credit cards and I wouldn't be able to sell to them w/out paypal. If I had my own personal merchant account then I probably wouldn't accept paypal because of the high fees. image
