That's what I get for grading a series I don't know - could be a light strike as appropriate for the date, and low luster could be hazy toning. Tought to tell from a pic as usual, etc, etc, etc...

That is basically the point of the thread after a grade thread that was shown a few days ago and the image was much worse. Grades were given when you could not see the luster or even good detail.
Looks like it could be an MS-63 (FB?)as I can see the cartwheel. There is some rub and am tempted to call it AU-58 but I can't since the strike and luster looks full and the bands look strong. However, I can't tell if the bands are split or not on my computer screen.
.....that could very well be and probably correct. But the picture was terrible and like I said good sound advice was needed untill he can put up better pictures.
62/63 tops..........not the best strike on the obv.
Family, kids, coins, sports (playing not watching), jet skiing, wakeboarding, Big Air....no one ever got hurt in the air....its the sudden stop that hurts. I hate Hurricane Sandy. I hate FEMA and i hate the blasted insurance companies.
And the result is 6 for Mint State , 7 for AU and one No Grade. I counted JOM as one for each seems how he was a little wishy washie on the final grade but did have a disclaimer. Orville was just about the same also.
Now the coin. What you see in the picture is just about it. The coin has little if any rub and is struck pretty nicely. Let me say a little something about Mercs and pictures. I wanted to show the Wing detail so that left the hair detail weak. For me to show a Merc and its strike two pictures are needed of both the obverse and the reverse. Every once in awhile they show up nicely but not often. The picture is why some said it looked weakly struck. The reverse is FB but does not show in the picture.
The Luster is very very weak on this dime. Actually I think this coin has been gently cleaned after being in circulation for a short time obverse wise. The reverse looks 62 or 63 to me.
Now what you cannot see. By shooting the coin straight on you cannot see all of the hairlines and chatter. Some show up but not nearly all of them. Most visible are the lines on the reverse right field and some in the left field. From what I see on the site here the obverse looks almost mark free. It is not.
AU55 is the grade and it is correct.
Grading by a picture or scan is tough as I think this one has shown. Thanks for the participation.

Cannot see? I did! In fact, the reason I was wishy washy was I couldn't tell if the lines were from the holder or not. Apparently, they are not. I'm suprised the coin is FB though....the picture doesn't show that...

Keep some grades coming . Also add why you graded it like you did.

I'm gonna stick my neck out and say AU-58
From here looks like faint wear on key areas of hair, way too much chatter & marks for MS imho - I'd say FB but irrelevent -
however, nice skin and luster and would likely "pass" as MS61-62.

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.
