can you Value and grade this?

Hey everyone,
Im new here (first post actually) image ive been collecting coins for quite sometime now, but only seriously the last two months or so (i had inherited a split of my father coin collection) nothing too fancy but definatly a good amount to intrigue me image. Ive been out medal detecting a few times, only half way decent find was a sterling silver antique bowl, funny thing is i had just put the medal detector in the back of the jeep and walked to the passenger side only to roll my ankel on a object in the grass, hence the bowl image

so ive had this coin since the beginning and im curious as to what you guys would grade it at, and maybe a rought estimate of value. I notice you guys seem to be ontop of your stuff and i will be reaqding and learning much from ya guys

Its the 1845 victoria im inquiring about image

Heres a link to the folder:image station folder

(its image station, so you have to join or be a member to view, anyone know where to host pics a little easier?)
Thanks in advance!
Sam

cool coin but I have no idea. You might try posting this over on the world coin forum...im sure they could help you out alot more.

    welcome aboard!

    Agreed,

Since it isn't a US Coin, you will most likely have better luck with a post into the World Coin Forum as Cladiator mentioned.
While there are some really smart cookies that frequent the US Coin Forum, and some may know the answer, you have better odds over "there" image

    Welcome

    Indeed you did. image

Kudos to Smitty79 for uploading and posting the picture here- I wasn't gonna go through the rigamarole of getting log-on credentials to ImageStation.

The coin is British. It is either a farthing, halfpenny, or penny, depending on the diameter. The grade would be Very Good (VG8).

If it is closer in size to a US nickel, it is a farthing (1/4 penny). If it is between quarter and half dollar size, it's a halfpenny. If it is between half dollar and silver dollar size, it is a penny.

Using the Second Edition Krause Standard Catalog of World Coins, we get this data:
Farthing: KM725, copper. 1845: mintage 3.226 million.Catalogs $3.50 in Fine.(So your coin would be worth about $1.50-$2.00 if it is the farthing).Halfpenny: KM726, copper. 1845: mintage 1.075 million. Key date.Catalogs $30.00 in Fine.(So your coin would be worth about $15.00-$25.00 if it is the halfpenny).Penny: KM739, copper. 1845: mintage 323 thousand.Catalogs $6.00 in Fine.(So your coin would be worth about $3.00-$5.00 if it is the penny).
It's rather interesting that the penny has a much lower mintage than the halfpenny, yet the halfpenny is worth so much more. And stranger still, there are several dates for the KM726 type halfpenny with lower mintages than the 1845 had, but for some reason that one is a key date, superceded only by the 1860 (which was made during the transition to a new design, and is worth $200.00 in Fine).

If you post it on the World Coin Forum (which we call "The Dark Side"), you may get a response from a British coin specialist with a Spink catalog, which will give you values on what the coin goes for in Great Britain. Spink's prices are usually more accurate for British material than Krause's, since Spink specializes in British coins and Krause covers the whole world. Come to think of it, I have a 2002 or 2003 Spink catalog myself, but it gives prices in British pounds, so that probably won't help you much. If you want to know those prices, though, I will be happy to look them up for you once we determine what denomination your coin is.

Edit to my reply above: are you sure that isn't an 1843? It's hard to tell from the picture. If it is an 1843, that'll change the prices I quoted you, obviously. Smitty79, who was kind enough to upload it for you, titled the picture "1845", so I went with that. Sometimes those 3's and 5's are difficult to distinguish from one another on these coins.

Note that all the grading and pricing I gave you above is also based on the assumption that the coin is in a similar condition on the reverse. Better pictures would have helped.

It is a 1845, quite visible to the naked eye, unfortunatly i only have a little HP photosmart320 2.1MP camera so that really the best it can do

Im not really looking to sell it [so any quote is a good quote image] but if it has enough value i might send it in to pcgs, theyll do world coins right?

and thanks for the welcome's everyone image
