I'm also going to guess it's in one of NGC's newer vacuum sealed slabs -- I hate the way they bulge out and scuff in that spot at the top of the obverse!
<< <i>NTC 66. I like that tone, nice coin! >>
Not NTC! It would be a cold day in hell before I paid over sheet for an NTC coin (well, anything's possible... I guess...)

Where on earth is the rub, Baley?
Nice coin.

tops of the feathers, lowermost curl, highpoints of the bow on rev.
even if "rubbed" though (and maybe it's not) it's still worth at least 64 money for the eye appeal.
edit: actually, took another look at the second set of pictures, change my answer to 65BN

Edit: Baley caved in under pressure and changed his vote to MS. However, I think I see some rub there, too, so I'll be ornery and stick to my guns, though I may be a solitary fool for doing so. I voted as if I had not read anyone else's reply.

<< <i>between feathers #7 and #8- a clashmark, maybe? >>
There's something... we couldn't decide at the seminar, though
Actual grade is: MS64BN--I think the grade is right on, if not MS64--it's very clean and the lustre quite nice for a brown coin. No lustre breaks, and definitely not AU.

Those weblike connections between some of the feathers are clashmarks from the wreath.
The best part of this was showing it to someone who almost bought it, and telling him I got it at less than the sticker price when he was told the sticker price--firm

Has market grading changed these standards, or am I missing something? An inquiring mind wants to know.

I don't see any rub, maybe just a little weakness in the first two
feathertips and the lower curl.
The toning overrides any of that though.
Even on later dates they don't always strike up fully on the diamonds and feathertips. I see a lot of people here confuse strike weakness on IH's with wear, with their focus on the 4 diamonds having a lot to do with that. You can argue that an IH shouldn't be called gem if the diamonds or feathertips aren't full, but that alone doesn't mean it's below MS. I think the lower hair curl actully shows wear before the diamond band does.

<< <i>Okay, maybe I need a grading lesson. I always thought that the late date IHCs were well struck, and therefore, should be able to clearly see all 4 diamonds on the ribbon on an uncirculated coin. On this coin, I don't see this. According to that standard, this coin would be an AU coin. >>
First off, the diamonds are all there Secondly, you can have a super-flat strike, but if there are no lustre breaks, the coin is still MS (search for some MS 1926-S buffalo nickels to see this--they don't look VF detailwise).
So the strike is a little soft--that's one aspect of the grading (along with lustre, contact marks, and eye appeal). Even if you deduct for strike, the lustre is great, there are few contact marks, and the eye appeal could definitely add a point... all in all, I think the grade is good.

That's why I guessed 65BN, and if this was an earlier NGC slab it likely would have been. 64's and below usually have some aspect that's very distracting, usually spots, blotchy toning areas, or very weak strikes. Even in your huge pic my eye only catches a small nic on the cheek and a few scattered reverse flyspecs.
