I plan to stay in a hotel some distance from the city and drive in early in the morning. Where is the best (safest/cheapest) place to park near the convention site? Thanks for your help.

Refer to map. Convention Center is near the top of the map. If you can handle PDF files, use this instead (street names are easier to read since you can zoom in)
The lot directly north of the CC (next to the river) is a huge (really huge) surface lot. It extends from 11th St to past the top edge of the map, so there's a chance you could be pretty far away. The lot at 11th and Smallman is also a surface lot but it will fill up quickly as it's not as big. At Ninth and Penn is a multilevel garage.
If you don't know your way around, I would recommend the huge lot mentioned above if you can handle the potential walk because it's close, or the garage at the Convention Center or the Westin. But in any event you now have a map of all the places to park. There are some small surface lots which are pricey, but they are attended all day.

<< <i>Kranky - are the streets in the immediate vicinity of the conv. center two-way? >>
Yes. Check the map in the first link in my earlier post. The one-way streets downtown are marked with arrows, but none of them are in the immediate vicinity of the convention center.
I apologize in advance that Pittsburgh, due to the hills and bridges, isn't the easiest place to get around but I will cheerfully provide directions to anyone who asks. One of the things to watch out for when driving downtown is, as you approach the point, you can find yourself on an Interstate on-ramp without much warning.
