Scanning....scanning....scanning....

I have finally decided, after numerous false starts, to start scanning in my cards. I want to thank bobsbbcards (Bob) for his thread that led me through it. After about two hours I finally have my 1969 Topps, Card #1 scanned and entered. At this rate about 25-30 more years and 69's will be finished. Actually, it would have been much easier if I had actually read all of Bob's directions before having a dozen mis-starts. I also found out the hard way about naming conventions...underscores only. Tomorrow I will actually try and enter a number of the PSA-9's and 10's in the 1969's. I have read numerous comments on the importance of having the registry public and with scans and will try to do my part...I am just a bit slow, old, and not too great at this new-fangled computer thing.

Cheers to all,

Dave C.

Dave - Just a tip. You don't have to scan each card individually. You can fit 5 slabs on the scanner bed, then break it up into 5 separate files.
  • I have a question about the size of the image. Can it be 100 KB or does it have to be 99.9KB? Also so there a max Dimension? Thanks

I've actually found that they need to be no more than about 97.5 KB, at least according to the sizes listed in my Windows folder. I've had to tinker with many images that show up in the details view as being between 97 and 100 KB because they end up getting rejected by the Registry when I try to upload them.

I thought the limit was 50 kb?

All of my scans are between 45-65 kb and I've had no problems uploading. Still have a bunch more of my '69's & 77's to do Dave so maybe your scans will light a fire under me. image

I don't know if your scanner will do this but mine keeps the cropping the same from picture to picture. I place the card in the top left corner of the picture with the cropping already set to fit a PSA holder so every picture comes out exactly perfect. Also with this method, I average about 15 to 20 seconds per picture. I can whip out 100 pictures for Ebay auctions in about a half hour. If you sell a lot on Ebay, I would recommend using a scanner that does this. The time you save yourself is worth the cost of a new scanner. I have a Canon Canoscan LiDE 30 and it cost about 75 dollars.
  • Thanks for the advice; I have now done over 20 more in half the time of the first one. I still haven't tried scanning more than one at a time.

Thanks to bobsb I now scan slabs to a file size no larger than 60K, usually between 45-50.
This produces a 500 pixel high slab, or just under 6 inches.

    Saved in jpeg, optimized.

I've been scanning the front and back of my cards and editing them together.

Here is a card I just put on the registry. The total scan size is 99541 bytes.

  • For those who are wondering, the reason a 99.5KB file will get rejected is most likely because 1KB = 1024 bytes, and the limit is probably 100,000 bytes rather than 100KB. On a Windows machine at least, right-clicking on a JPG icon and selecting Properties will show you the file size in bytes as well as KB if you ever want to double check this.

  • WOW! Very informative thread. I didn't even think about scanning cards together and making several files. I will be trying it today....Thanks for the good advice.

This thread also encouraged me to scan my regsitry cards. I try to keep them under 50kb to save on display time.

  • Tried it...works great! Scanned six cards at a time, cut and saved into single files. Awesome advice!

Sets with scans are the only ones I look at. It's really neat to go through and see all the nice cards everyone has. Sets without scans don't get my attention because it's just numbers. I know it takes longer to scan them in, but if you really want to show off what you have, you have to allow people the privelige to see it!
  • Awesome cards Dave. Thanks for putting up the scans.
