Seeking advice

I am thinking about selling my 71 Topps Greatest Moments partial set (25%), currently #9.

What do you think would be best. Sell as a group or break them up as individuals.

Individually will usually get the highest $ amount. In selling a 25% group, you will force many buyers/bidders to pass if they only need a portion...jay
  • By partial set, do you mean that the complete set is partially graded, or that the set is partially complete, raw or graded? If selling individually, a few high grade stars will go for big dollars to player collectors, but the remainder of the players probably won't move well. Since it's such a popular obscure set, I think interest will be high if sold complete, since most don't want to take the time to complete card by card.

  • Already 2 differences of opinions...

This set is 25% complete, all graded and currently #9 on the set registry.
  • If the set were completed, I'd say sell as a whole. Since it's a partial set, sell them individually. For a niche set like the Greatest Moments, you'll most likely get more (and higher) bids from individuals looking for specific cards. And if they're higher grade (8 or better) you'll get even more interest in those trying to upgrade their collections as well.

    Good luck!

67SU - You apparently don't know the 1971 GM market, yes its obscure, but it is in demand! I imagine all cards will get action...jay

You seem more versed on this set so you're probably correct. I was just making a generalization regarding Topps supplemental sets. I placed the '71 GM in the category with '64 Giants, '66 Ruboffs, and '69-'71 Supers, not '68 3Ds and '68 AS Stickers. Now that it's clear that the set is incomplete, I would definitely sell cards individually.

I would compare it to 1969 Supers in scarcity, but much harder to get in top condition. '69 Supers used to be tougher to get in the days before the Internet. You could always find a few of the DP '71 GMs at a show (even a smaller show). This made them seem more common than they were. It turned out the most of the nice looking '71 GMs had been doctored (black marker taken to the edges). It also turned out that SP '71 GMs were tough as the devil to find.

I would think, in today's market, that a complete set of '71 GM in PSA 7 might bring about $7,000 (even without two or more nutso bidders). '69 Supers would have to be in at least 8 to get the same action.

    Just my 1/50th of a $.

  • Bob,

Would you put '71 GM more on par with '62 Baseball Bucks? Which set/singles are harder to come by?

Bob - awesome 1968 Topps 3-D set you just registered!
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

break it up , I sold mine about 2 months ago. I had 1 psa8 , 4 psa 6's and about 15 psa 7's. I received a lot more indiviually than I ever could have together. I haven't been following the market since I sold but my 7's did exceptionally well. I broke them up and listed them in 2 lots , one on tuesday and one on thursday .

I think that is a fair comparison. I waffle back and forth about which is harder to find in sets or singles. Again, finding nicely centered bucks is as much a chore as finding NM Greatest Moments. In responding to this question, I put together a list of Topps test issues according to the difficulty I have found in finding them. See new thread if interested.

    MS,
Thanks! I was kind of embarrassed to mention it on the forum. It seemed somehow wrong to bump Mr. Fogel down a notch, and knock Jim out of the top 5 (waiting for the lightning to strike me down). image
  • I'm getting some good advice so far...thank you all for your opinions.

    Kevin-
I think you ought to sell the whole thing as one item with a buy it now of 80% of SMR on Ebay. Just let me know before you place it out there so I can throw my bid on it. image
Seriously, don't sell it you will regret it.

  • Shane...you think...hold off? I trust your opinion; you're the expert in this category.

Should I decide to sell, many are 8 with a qualifier, which are hard to price by SMR standards (as is these cards as a whole). Seems when you send in your cards they are assigned to a single grader, if that person has a "qualifier attitude" the marginal cards will be given such. I have straight 7's in the same group that are equally OC as the qualifiers. These cards should simply be re-submitted. I should scan them for show. The only exception is the 8MC, no brainer there.

I should consider your thought of holding off, especially if you say I will regret it.
