Does a persons registry set ranking affect your opinion of that person

MarkMark Posts: 3,546 ✭✭✭✭✭
Along with many other people, I was watching Mr. Platinum tell Russ that he (or his son...I got a bit confused) was going to kick the portion of Russ's anatomy that is commonly used for sitting by surpassing Russ's Kennedy set. This assertion lead me to wonder: Does a person's registry set ranking affect your opinion of that person?

In my case, it does not. I have my "favorite posters," determined by how helpful and/or knowledgeable the person is to me or others. And that opinion does not depend on the person's registry sets. Shylock is a perfect example: To the best of my knowledge, he has no sets registered, but I would like to read every post he makes.

So, is there anyone that uses how high or low a person's registry set(s) ranks to (help) determine their opinion of that person?

A little bit. If I don't know the person through posting but I see his set listed it has an effect.
I assume someone with a highly ranked set has to be somewhat knowledgable in that series.

    Yes it does.

When they keep to themselves and do not talk about their coins, and most High Rankers do not, how is a person going to get the ins and outs about the particular series. I presume they know the series inside out.

Most Mid Range ranking set owners are fairly vocal it seems......

    Not one bit!
I wouldn't have touched this at all, except that when Russ mentioned pictures, it hit a sore spot.
Personally, I do appreciate pictures of some registry coins.
I am remiss, as I have not provided any pictures of any of my coins.
I just keep reminding myself, that a picture of a PR69DC Silver Eagle, is really a waste of time and space. Unless of course, it has some special toning, which not many do, and finds a home in a PCGS slab.
Ahhh, one day, I'll have someone take pics of those older coins in my sets, that are special in their own way.
But, my bullion sets will remain anon.. image

It doesn't matter to me at all how people have registered their sets and if they are number one or number 100!

What does matter is the manner in which they act! (take that anyway you want)

No, a person's ranking doesn't matter one bit. While most of the Registry participants and members of this forum seem to be fine people, we have recently seen some prime examples of obnoxiousness from those who are wealthy and those of modest means. Unfortunately, they don't know how to settle their differences privately in a civilized manner. The things a person says and how they say it tells me much more about the person than their ranking in the Registry.

Cocoinut, I for one agree with you 101% on this comment. Others have been kicked off this board for less and the gross obnoxious talk around here is dispicable to say the very least, not to mention one of these people has a PhD.

As for Mark's post, I for one do not care where a person ranks on his/her registry sets, just that they are fellow coin collectors and they have something great to say that I may learn from. One of my best coin friends has modest sets and will never compete for any #1's. He enjoys collecting MS66's where 67's and 68's are the norm.

I personally would look up to anyone who can make a "Homemade set", because anyone can buy a coin and stick it in a safe! That doesn't mean that just because you have a "top-pop" set that you know everything there is to know about that set.

To me the important point is how the registry affects the individual. We've all been witnesses to some folks exhibiting extreme behaviours.image

No it doesnt. Not even close to it. Peoples posts does... but their set rank has nothing to do with what I think of them.

  • .....No not at all !

However I am envious - sometimes,....... especially when it is a rarity or low pop that everyone needs for there set or would love to have !

I have watched these forums from the beginning and daily look at progression of sets and new additions. Its like a giant chess game that takes years to complete, in the end there are no losers.

No, not at all. I would say it is the manner in which they respond to other fellow board members. This is just part (although we cannot solely use this) of the actions we read/see to give us some idea of their character. JMO image

Honestly....yes. Hard to explain. Do I LIKE them more? No, not really, but I feel somehow prouder to know someone with a nice set (no offense women) is genuinely nice & goes out of their way to help newbies or takes the time to share their knowledge

The only member I've had the pleasure of meeting in person is Larry Shapiro. He had some Morgans he was selling & I wanted to buy some. I went to his house, we sat in his 'office' chatted some, I bought some of his coins (raw, I was into albums at the time). In fact went over his house a few times. When I later found out where he is (was) in the registry I thought how great that I met him.

Kind of like a sports superstar that is also friendly, he'll still be a superstar whether he's friendly or an a**hole but you just like him a bit more if he's friendly & you're happy for them.

I have also had great chats with BAJJERFAN, & K6AZ who I kid that I will catch him on the registry (getting close is easier than passing!). Both these guys have great Morgan sets.
I also think very highly of Ron (RNCHSN) who I think doesn't even have a registry set (forgive me Ron if you do).

Then there are other guys who seem to be real a**es that I don't care where they are in respect to the registry set, #1 or #1000, they're still a**es!image

Well, I guess someone has to answer "from the other side" as I have only had top sets, or sets that don't reach the top due to non-completion, but had/have only pop tops, (ie. 29th, MS $50G, at 70.0, check pops; link below).
I have to say that the attitudes of some (of the more boisterous) posters, but not most, are way too obviously full of "sour grapes" towards those with higher-ranked reg. sets.
But, hey, even the super rich are jealous of those who "appear" richer, and "I've heard" that it just comes down to "new vs. old money".
    How absurd...
...as is the idea that some coin collecors cannot stand that some other coin collectors have a perceived "better" set.
Personally, I like the competition, and I love to get outdone. ...and I am real jealous of Braddick's P01s.
    Happy in 29th place image

    Great post.

Certainly if someone has a million dollar collection then it will be noted but I'd never
judge a man on the basis of his wealth or lack thereof. Other than the comraderie,
the most important thing around here for me is knowledge. It's especially nice when
that knowledge is in one of my specialties but all coins are of extreme interest to me.
