1885 Liberty 5C Business Strike (Carson dollars and more)

I'm posting this here for etiquette reasons -- I have a few coins I'd like to sell, and it would be nice to get fair prices for them.

Wow, in searching Heritage's prices realized, I see that an 1885 MS 64 5c piece went for ~$3800. Mine is in a PCGS holder and is a very nice coin (albeit untoned) -- is it reasonable for me to ask $3800 for the piece?

Views out there on fair asking prices for (i) Morgan 1892 CC MS 63 DMPL (Anacs holder, bought in 1998, slight tan rim toning), (ii) Morgan 1883 CC 65 DMPL (Anacs holder, bought in 1998, slight tan rim toning), (iii) SLQ 1917 D type 2 64FH (NGC holder, white) and (iv) 3c 1853 66 (NGC holder, white)? It is hard to see where the market is from published sources, frankly, because the market seems to move faster than the published sources.

  • I'll tell ya, prices are insane. It wasn't that long ago I stopped bidding on a PCGS MS65 1885 5c at around $1500 (Heritage auction). Either I wait for this bubble to burst or I'm out for good.

Would love to have it, but it isn't in the cards at this time.

The 1885 has really jumped in price the last year or so. The only thing you have to realize when you look at auction results is if the bidders think it was undergraded. A quick look at the results for this coin (graded by PCGS) on my website shows:

I'd love to make an offer on the 85 V nickel, but $3800 is way more than I could pay for it. On that one, you're probably looking at two+ people thinking it would upgrade. That happens with the cents all the time.
