what do you guys think of this idea for a registry set?

How about all the rookie cards of a certain position on a certain team. What I mean is let's say I choose the packers and I want to collect all the rookie cards of the quarterbacks. I would get Favre, Starr, Majkowski...... What do you think, I think the set would be completeable. It could be any position too, reciever, running back, whatever. It could cross into other sports too. Let me know what you think.

It's doable in the abstract, but this seems to be one of those sets where there would be a lot of arguments about including a guy or there would be a lot of junk cards getting slabbed, so that few people would be interested in it
Favre, Starr, Rote - so far, so good. John Hadl, Lynn Dickey and Don Majkowski - OK, I guess.
Mike Tomczak - well, he was starting QB for a season.
Jim McMahon and Mark Brunell - well, they were good with other teams.
Anthony Dilweg, Doug Pederson, and Craig Nall - AAAAHHHH <running in terror at the thought of paying money to slab their cards>.

It would be even worse at other positions.

  • What if you simply decided up front to pick one player per year (presumably the one with most games played or games started) per position? There are probably situations in which this wouldn't work (well-organized platoons, I suppose), but if used as a starting point perhaps it would eliminate a large fraction of problems--and in particular those pesky third string quarterbacks make 5 pass attempts all year.
